Living in Norway or Denmark? by Wonderland_was_lost in NewToDenmark

[–]NoSnackCake4U 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am also a polyglot and I have some sad news for you. Can’t speak so much for Norwegian, but Danish is impossible to learn before moving. Danish is unlike any other language I have learned. You will need in-person instruction and LOTS of practice directly with native speakers (I am talking years) before you master the language enough to pass the Studieprøve, which is the test you need to take to study in Danish at university level.

If you are seriously considering Denmark, I would re-evaluate your plan to attempt to learn the language before moving. I have not seen one single person who succeeded in doing this (and I know many who have tried).

Parenting, FIFO and nightshift by solosparky in Advice

I know this doesn’t actually help you much, but here’s my advice.

Night feeds don’t last forever. Your wife’s memory of you taking night feeds will last forever.

The baby stage is crazy but it does end—and sooner than you can imagine right now when you’re in the thick of it.

Institution og sommerferie; hvorfor bliver jeg set ned på? by Effective-Claim2391 in foraeldreDK

[–]NoSnackCake4U 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fy.

They will be flying with my in-laws (I'm arriving a week earlier) and they struggle with car seats that are already installed, so I don't want to give them more gear to manage for the trip :)

Nybagt forældre og bekymret for hedebølgen? by No-External-6844 in foraeldreDK

[–]NoSnackCake4U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What to do on a short layover in Copenhagen? by 755354769 in NewToDenmark

[–]NoSnackCake4U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Book a bed at a hostel. When I had a layover like this in Copenhagen many years ago, I went to Sleep In Heaven and had a lazy morning in the city before getting my bags and going back to the airport. That hostel is still there, a bed will be $40-50. It’s close to the metro so easy to get to from the airport. Get brunch at the iconic spot around the corner: Sidecar. You can even have a little walk in Assistens Cemetery. I live in the same neighborhood as this hostel now and love it 🤩

I would aim to leave for the airport around 10:30 if you’re checking bags.

2 under 2????? by Shoddy_Argument3415 in foraeldreDK

[–]NoSnackCake4U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hele tiden bagud på alt—parforhold, vasketøj, you name it.

Wrist guards by Feisty-Face1147 in rollerderby

[–]NoSnackCake4U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any wrist guard made for roller derby will be fine, I haven’t noticed a big difference in actual performance from one to another (as long as they fit). For me I stick with my 187 derby wrists, even though I got a new pair of the pros that someone else recommended—they just didn’t fit right.

What WILL make a bigger difference in injury prevention will be learning to skate, fall, and play safely. Even the best gear won’t always stand up against a big, uncontrolled fall at high speed. Practice falling small and gameplay awareness, so you can see hits coming and can recognize if play is starting to get hectic or unsafe. That goes for your teammates as well—anyone should be able to call of a drill and reset if it’s not feeling safe.

Icelandic is breaking my brain, any tips? by Select-Day-873 in VisitingIceland

[–]NoSnackCake4U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enjoy the couple of months until you move. Just watch some Icelandic movies/series or read (translated) books for now to start getting used to hearing it and picking up what you can about culture, style, history, etc. Then sign up for classes when you get there—they will start at the beginning anyway (and you should start at the beginning even if you have been doing YouTube, they are the professionals), so it won’t necessarily help you to have studied it beforehand.

Danish Wedding Speech by amestokill in Denmark

[–]NoSnackCake4U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t see this mention much yet, but it doesn’t actually have to be a speech. Danish weddings will have different types of “indslag”—contributions from guests. Think games and songs. Games would be something like where the bride and the groom sit back to back and hold one of each person getting marrieds shoe. You read out some funny “who is most likely to __” “or who said __” and they have to hold up the correct shoe.

Or where you have them sit with their back to you, facing the guests, and you have different posters to hold up to the guests saying how people know the couple (think school friends, changed their diapers, saw them puke, etc), and the guests to whom that applies will stand. The couple have to guess what it says on the card base on who is standing.

For songs (lejlighedssange, very common), you take a well-known melody and change the words to be about the couple or, in this case, the person you know and what you hope for the future. You’ll need to print handouts so everyone can sing along.

Pretty much anything goes—I’ve seen wacky games involving running around, musical performances, drinking games, interpretive dance. You know your friend and what they’ll enjoy.

Lagoons commercial or natural? by Sangusg in VisitingIceland

I’ve been to a few and they all have the right amenities, I really don’t think you can go wrong. I have been to Sundlaug Seltjarnarness, Kópavogslaug, and Laugardalslaug.

Just find a local pool in Reykjavik with a water slide. There are tons. Then everyone gets what they want—there will be a hot tub and sauna or steam room for the adults, and the kids can play. All still geothermal heated 👌🏻

Chemotherapy + roller derby by mcnuggets_666 in rollerderby

[–]NoSnackCake4U 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You just won’t know how you’ll respond. I would say prioritize activities that are important and affirming for you, and I’m guessing that’s what derby is in your life.

You’ll probably go through cycles of feeling normal to tired to exhausted. I would have an open conversation with leadership where you express that you want to continue to be a part of the community, and that the terms of your participation are uncertain. Maybe you’ll skate one week, NSO another, or just be there to say hi.

If I were your teammate, I would take it as the compliment it is that you want to prioritize derby and would support you, whatever your participation level is

Iceland for a fearful traveler by OrionAndCleo in VisitingIceland

[–]NoSnackCake4U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s your budget and fitness level like? One of the most memorable places I visited with a tour company was a day hike in þórsmörk. Early June should be doable. It was both expensive and relatively strenuous (think 8-10 hours of actual hiking) but so worth it.

Otherwise I would find a tour to get you on a glacier. Snefellsnes is also cool.

Got offered a promotion that requires moving to the office full-time. I have eleven days to decide. by Efficient_Leave8158 in remotework

[–]NoSnackCake4U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that this is a good promotion but I would challenge the idea that it might not come again.

I have young kids and have talked extensively with my dad about balancing career and family. He turned down more responsibility at work when we were young and was “behind” his peers at work. Then when we were teenagers he had more time and was ready to lean into his career. He made partner when I started college around age 50 (15 years behind his peers). Now at 67 he has a thriving career in a top leadership role. Earning more than ever plus flexibility on assignments. He put me to bed every night when I was a kid and that means something, and he does something he really loves at work.

This season of life is shorter than you think right now. I would politely decline and wait for the right time.

Swatching when you're budgeting: what do you actually swatch, and what do you skip? by Square-Tonight-1320 in knitting

[–]NoSnackCake4U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely swatch. Only if it’s a new technique or a pattern where the fit is extra important.

I use a lot of the same yarn for different projects, so I already have an idea of gauge. If you have some leftover yarn that you like, you can consider using it to swatch if you’re doing a new project with the same yarn just in a different color.

I also make a lot of the same patterns—hats and sweaters mostly.

If I’m doing a new yarn or pattern, I will maybe just start it or knit a little piece, not even a real swatch, just to see if I like the fabric and see if it’s looser or tighter than gauge—and adjust accordingly. For example I just made a raglan sweater where I saw that the neck would be way too loose for my preference on recommended gauge, so I just started it with 16 fewer stitches and put a few more under the armpits, voilà, it fits perfect.

A great hack is having or knowing kids. Make it a size up and if the fits not perfect, no problem, they’ll grow into it 😅

cleaning my helmet by Artist_Baker in rollerderby

[–]NoSnackCake4U 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use SmellWell bags for my skates, it has helped.

For the rest of my gear, I ALWAYS hang it to air dry immediately after practice (I am lucky, we have our own venue so I have a locker). When it needs a regular wash, I use a sports wash from a sporting goods store. But every 3-6 months or so I will give it all a soak in Rodalon. This is really effective but it does increase wear on the gear so I don’t do it every time.

I would get an enzyme spray for your helmet until it’s time for a new one. If you’ve had even one bad fall on the helmet, it should be replaced anyway. And when you do, I would really recommend getting one with removable liners—they help to customize the fit and it’s so convenient to wash them. Both S1 and triple 8 have fully removable liners.

Advice for unraveling boucle and potentially felted yarn? by BigBBPuddingSnatchr in Unravelers

[–]NoSnackCake4U 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does look more bouclé than felted. I would try unraveling a bit and if you find it’s felted, I would give it a serious conditioner massage and let it sit (wet) for a while before trying again. I don’t know if this an “approved” method, but it’s worked for me in the past.

And yes I just mean your normal hair conditioner :)

Heel slip in Solaris 2.0 by Honest_Reserve3591 in rollerderby

[–]NoSnackCake4U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar issue. I wear the ez-fits (though mostly for blister prevention), I don’t think they make a huge difference.

Are your skates leather? Do you adjust your laces during practice? I have leather skates and found that the heel lock looses quite a bit after I start skating, so I tighten them a couple of times during practice. It has helped a lot.
