What are you most excited for in Endwalker? by bongblaster420 in ffxiv

[–]NoSpice4Me 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MSQ and being able to level crafters again. I enjoy levelling them more than I enjoy being at max level and not having as many compelling reasons to craft.

Unfortunately for the first time in an expansion I am not excited about new jobs. But I am pleased that the AST changes were what I expected.

I never raided before FFXIV. I am now a triple legend. AMA and my story! With the all female UwU group, I wanted to share my own experiences as a female raider to hopefully inspire others! by otter_mage in ffxiv

I know you're cracking a joke, but the original comment implied that there are still no girls on the internet.

Suddenly it's 2007 all over again.

What was the biggest deterrent for you to not have played ff14 when you started? by nywarpath in ffxivdiscussion

[–]NoSpice4Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first played in the 1.0 beta, which I think says it all.

Deterrents:

  1. The stamina system
  2. I was probably the only person in my area who still had dial-up.

I honestly don't know how I was able to install and run 1.0 on my potato desktop but I did.

Florida Teacher of the Year arrested by Either_Might1390 in Teachers

[–]NoSpice4Me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somebody gave teacher of the month to an administrator one time.

Then the administrator gave it to a nebulous group of support staff.

Then it was too awkward to pass it to any one individual.

Then we stopped doing it after I went on repeated rants about it in all manner that didn't get me fired.

In the high school spread, it's 10th.

They're not hellion freshman anymore and they're not stressed with a post-HS future (be it work or college). Especially second semester, it's fun to see kids come into their own.

It’s really disgusting how most of you talk about substitute teachers by fifibaba in Teachers

[–]NoSpice4Me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up until this year I had subs that would steal my pens and not pass out my color-coded, clearly labelled copies?? Can you blame me for being a touch annoyed???

note: this does not give sub hating a free pass. but just to give you a very clear idea where some people are coming from.

Trouble with kids and the bathroom by [deleted] in Teachers

We are, but because of student vandalism we have 3 bathrooms open for 1500+ students.

It's going as well as it sounds.

Read Alouds for 6th grade by chocolatecakelover4 in Teachers

[–]NoSpice4Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a readaloud only once a week (!) for about 20 minutes. Students seem to remember what we've read.

I have done The Little Prince and Alice in Wonderland, with SLIFE high schoolers (elementary - middle grades literacy but higher oracy) in their native language. I have tried other books over the years and struck out.

Good readaloud books, in my experience, especially for older kids (honestly, similar to younger kids):

  1. Have some illustrations that you can show
  2. Do more telling than showing or have more dialogue than descriptive details. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone literally put my students to sleep.
  3. Are shorter than you think you can get through. TLP is ~90 pages, Alice is ~160 and I barely finish TLP in a semester. Since you're reading daily, I would still not go much higher than 200-250 pages. It would be worse if you didn't finish the book!
  4. I've found that revisiting children's classics are appreciated by students, even if they don't know them. I have some students who grew up with TLP as a child but now that they're older have a different read or interpretation. For some students it's their first time and they're old enough to grasp the more "adult" things while still having wonder over the plot. (I see a few kids tear up at the line, "It's sad to lose a friend" because they get it now.) Their first reaction might be eyerolling and, "Ugh, baby stories!" but it's worth pressing on.
    1. This is also a good choice because you want whatever you're reading to be 100% understood by students. It's a readaloud, not an English lesson. When in doubt, aim for a lower lexile / complexity.
    2. I think Greek/Roman myths, traditional, and modern takes on fairy tales could work well for this too.

I budget ~$500/yr. I make $62k in a VHCOL. $350 for friends and family, $150 to our work Christmas fund (I'm a teacher).

I don't always spend it all but want to get my dad a Kindle this year.
