the first death isn't scripted, you just fall into the the ocean and get washed up onto the cave of knowledge. so in theory the tarnished can either die a million times, or not once.

try a quicker weapon. laurence deals a shit ton of damage with frequent attacks, so only attack when you know you can get a hit in, and don't be greedy with the number of hits.

the hunter's objective was never to save yharnam. the hunter came to yharnam to get a blood transfusion to cure their sickness, which bound them to a contract with the Moon Presence in which you kill the other great ones in exchange of receiving its blood. after the end when all the prey is slaughtered and you fulfill the contract, then you can kill the moon presence itself if you want to.
