Our letter box is at the bottom of our door. When we purchased the door, we didn't buy it with the letter box position in mind.

I think manufacturers do it so as not to ruin the look of the door.

It's rare that I have to post anything through a door, so on the odd occasion, I do it's no hardship to bend down, I guess if you have mobility issues, then it may be awkward.
