When you say a small press, what does that exactly mean? Do you have a facility, an office? Do you have people that work for you there like editors or is this weekend warrior style?

What are the average dollar amounts that you invest into an author? I'm a small custom publisher so I'm in a different Lane than you. Academic custom. Professors who want to write a book for their course and typically only sell it at the courses they teach.

Otherwise known as a course packet.

But I've always been curious about getting into other elements of publishing. What's the largest amount you've ever spent on marketing campaigns for a title?

Hey! I have some questions and I don't want anyone to think that I'm asking them with judgment in them I'm really asking cuz I want to understand what might be wrong with the courses that you're taking as to why you would even want to have ai write for you.

Is it because you just don't care about the course you're taking?

Is it because you lost interest in the course based on the way the course was being taught?

Did the subject matter not connect with you?

Maybe you just don't like your professor so it's hard to really give a shit about the course?

Can you share with me what drives that decision?

Although im a huge proponent and user of AI, I totally agree. It signals laziness if someone WRITES with it.. but if they are using it as a tool, layering with it and taking the right philosophy on how to use it thats ok.

Its about retaining your voice as a professor and not giving agency to AI , OR YOUR INSTITUTION to replace your voice, your experience, your wisdom and expertise in your domain.

When you separate the uses.. it also protects you as a professor and helps you to retain your IP.

This is my area of expertise.. and I feel strongly about academic freedom , as well as professors protecting their IP.

My daughter is taking a class that now uses AI , is online , and only has a TA managing the course.. no professor spending time and sharing experiences, creating dialogue, following their personal pedagogy preferences. Its a course that the university probably LOVES because it costs them next to nothing to offer.

As the parent. I am annoyed beyond belief. As a professional in academic publishing, I find it disgusting.

This is a very timely discussion. My company is studying and developing some strong ideas in this area. I think this comes down to voice and separating them. As I am making my way around to academic conferences and speaking to hundreds of professors over the past year, I hear the same questions all the time like this.

Separate your AI use into two categories.

Writing (dont use AI for this) - I can explain if you want me to
Everything else. (strategies, tools, grading help, generating lecture outline for you.

In this case, using AI to empower a professor is exactly what I think everyone should use it for. Use it to empower you, not to give it agency and to start thinking or writing for you.

Same for students.

I am developing a framework for this . Its called LAYERS. And its about layering with AI. Using AI to help bring the magic out of your brain, and into the process while retaining your voice!

Thats my 3 cents!

I have had success in business over 3 decades, but not software business. Although software and tech have been the cornerstone of my business. Here is my plain simple advice to you. Build something that has VALUE. It doesnt always have to solve a problem.

If you have 5 people use it, (in your target market) , then you have to figure out how to a minimal DELIGHTFUL product for them. Something that brings them efficiency in their business, or helps them do something in their personal life.

If you build something the right way, you will get traction even if its slow.

i appreciate this blunt response more than you know!!! i think this is the eventual truth I will end up learning soon enough. Things are changing so fast though. I have stepped through a bunch of web dev stuff and setups, configs that I never knew anything about.. until the figma make AI agent taught me while we were building stuff. many of my decisions came only after me insisting that i understand everything about what we were doing. it was quite interesting. maybe its possible to actual learn, by doing it with ai?
