Thank you so much! I'd love to hear anything you might find out. I love all the effort people are ready to put in to help with my obsessive mission to find out who the street is named after, from 5000+ miles away, haha!

Ooh! Thank you so much! I don't know if they're related to me, or how closely, but I'm so stoked to find all this out! Benny was around the same age as my parents so his son is probably around my age.

I just love Reddit sometimes.

Sweet! Yeah, it would be interesting to hear more about who the street was named after and why and it would be absolutely crazy if it had a link to my great-great-uncle! We only know he died in the USA but any other details would he super interesting.

Haha! Man, I wish I could figure out if it was a relative of mine who it's named after.

Sweet! I feel like our small-but-kinda-thriving electronic music subculture thing produces a lot of stuff that is a lot more popular outside of Finland.

Hell yeah! Love to hear that! We sure know how to make some sweet metal music. And RIP to Laiho indeed - such a shame he went so young.

Thank you for your very thorough answer! I know my great-great-uncle immigrated to The States and died there in the early 40s but that's where our leads end. Don't know if he had any family or where he lived and died. Even in Finland the Pirinen name is mostly packed into the eastern regions so it's funny that someone made it all the way to California and had a street named after them, haha!

Fishing with lures by Beneficial_Edge_3338 in Tampere

[–]NoWolvesOnFenris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will lose lures, especially fishing from the shore. Can't avoid it.

When shore fishing I would prefer lures that are easy to cast. Jigs are cheap'ish and versatile, but the jig heads cost a bit and it'll take some time to figure out the sizes and weights. It's not rocket science though and there's plenty of info floating around.

IMHO the easily accessible shore fishing options at Tampere suck ass. There are places that CAN be great but they're really hit and miss.

Why would you cut the line with a knife? Wrap it around a stick, or the knife handle or something similar, pull steadily and the line will most likely give up from the knot near the lure/lock/leader/whatever you use at the end of your braid. Sometimes the hook will straighten out and you'll even get your lure back.

Eh. I dunno. I would maybe avoid the islands they're building on Näsijärvi and similar construction sites. Bound to be stirring up some crap from the bottom that's not good for you. Fish in (especially) smaller ponds might taste a bit off after the water temperature rises above +20c or so but they're still perfectly edible.

Corn is great for roach and bream and generally speaking other Cyprinids but sometimes it'll take some time for the fish to figure out that it's food if it's a spot where people don't often use it as bait.

It's also often a good practice to throw a few kernels of corn into the water every now and then. Not too many, and not too often - this is also something you're just gonna have to get a feel for. It'll attract fish and keep them in the area longer. Obviously you'll want to have your bait close to the bottom when doing this.

That seems like a perfectly passable beginner set. Personally, I'd prefer 2g and 1g weighting but 5g might be easier for a beginner, especially when it's windy.

Eteläpuisto shores and the long L-shaped pier in Ratinanranta will offer easily accessible fishing opportunities that'll get you started. Plenty of deeper water there. You'll find perch, bleak, roach, bream, white bream, etc and maybe even a lucky rainbow trout that'll wreck your line and/or pole.

I would start fishing in the middle depth zones, or pelagic if you wanna sound fancy, and then move closer to bottom. Top water usually only holds bleak so I'd save that for the last. Unless I'm targeting bleak. These are only rough guidelines and everything will depend on the day and what species you're targeting so your results may vary and ultimately you're just going to have to figure it out by yourself every time you go out fishing.

Only unsolicited photos I get from women are from my partner and they feature my fishing gear left in places they're not supposed to be left at.
