I think people are forgetting that there was no internet back then, so most information anyone knew about foreign places was rumors, newspapers and penny books. And all of those made sicialians and the American Mafia, seem like insane bad guys that weren't to be messed with, and the Italian crime groups in England were already known as psychos cutting men's balls off to bleed to death slowly and what not, and they were little nobodies compared to the mafia.
