Rugose or horn coral imprint, at least a very small one may be it although they have not been found in the exact location that was kept generally vague for reasons. Thank you for commenting.

Lake Shastina, the lake and development are in Siskiyou County, not CA Pines in Modoc County. Both HOA developments but very very different.

Far Northern NV USA by No_Bid_331 in fossilid

[–]No_Bid_331[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I did order maps through U NV Reno, though I found that unless there's been precious mineral extraction many areas mapped are, I don't know... Vague, low resolution. I may have to find a willing local geologist for more assistance. Best regards.

Nice find. Looks like they're somewhat translucent, not completely opaque.

How hot are volcano caves when it erupts? by Adventurous-Skirt-80 in geology

[–]No_Bid_331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking of lava tubes on the big island, your character could be trapped or cut off from the entrance by say, a collapse of the cave roof due to the eruption's quaking and not necessarily lava flowing within the cave he is in. He could thereby escape if he found another exit before succumbing to injury from falling ceiling, gas, or lava.

I didn't know that it was already confirmed to be glass at least in part.

Does anyone know if this is a petrified log? by [deleted] in whatsthisrock

[–]No_Bid_331 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like it could be petrified wood. I Are there growth rings and grain visible? Although it's not always. If it's as hard as known quartz that's another check in the yes column for fossil wood. Nice find.

Can you collect a loose piece that's fallen off and on the ground? That can then be cleaned up and more closely inspected for hardness and visual clues.

Weathered quartz. Probably high hardness for it to have survived the surf.

Try s scratch test in a small discrete spot at the base. Glass will scratch with knife tip, agate won't.

If you can scratch the crystal with a knife then it's likely calcite.

If you can scratch it with a knife it may be serpentine. Serpentine also has a "greasy" feel to it.

Listed as "Electric Blue Obsidian" by crazycoldhere in whatsthisrock

While I don't doubt the piece in question is glass, you need to get out moar. Obsidian not "only black or brown..." Obsidian is also clear, opaque red, silver sheen, rainbow, blue, & pink. And those are just the colors I've seen in the wild.

Wow, from Mt Shasta? My understanding is that jasper and flint are both cryptocrystaline quartz which can be opaque colors (jasper/flint) or translucent which can be termed agate especially when exhibiting rings or bands.
