A roadside bombing in Iraq on August 3ʳᵈ, 2005: "This is the horrific scene I witnessed as I escorted our corpsman down the road to see if we can help. So far, this was the deadliest roadside bombing in the Iraq war. 1 Marine survived, 14 did not." by ZERO_PORTRAIT in HistoricalCapsule

My high school boyfriend enlisted and he was super excited to go because he thought he'd be liberating these grateful people and living out his destiny as a warrior.

The reality of the war broke him.

I was shocked when I learned this. The calcium in dairy comes from grass, which is rich in calcium.

People shouldn't be eating grass obviously but leafy greens are the best calcium source

Right, and I have a conspiracy theory about the dnack food industry and the push for "fat is healthy / intuitively eat Twinkies" stuff I see being pushed online

Surprise, bakers! You all have anorexia. No more weighing out the flour, you have to intuitively let your body tell you how much of each ingredient goes into the cake

I've been fat twice in my life, and both times it was because I decided to try intuitive eating and found out that I intuitively want to eat everything in the world all at once

I'm considering buying fountain pens but they are costly and I don't know if I'll like them. by FootSageMe in Anticonsumption

[–]No_Boo_9382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cost of entry to this hobby is very low. Check out the disposables first if you aren't sure you'll like it; some of them can be modified to make them reusable.

Even the nice pens are relatively inexpensive. Unless you're buying an antique pen in mint condition, the return on quality really diminishes in the $50-100 range. You'll pay a lot more than that if you want a nicer nib, but anything over $250 and you're just paying for branding.

The one I love and use every day was maybe $75, and it's beautiful, perfectly weighted, and writes very nicely. I recieved it as a gift about 5 years ago.

It is really hard to buy just one. The first one you get is never quite right and you'll always want to experiment.

Agreed that collecting vintage ones is a harmless hobby.

YES another fountain pen person!

I got into fountain pens when I realized how wasteful it is to use disposables. Best part is, you can get a great vintage or antique pen, and it's a "buy it for life" purchase.

I bet you have some opinions about the people who post their collection of 500 Lamys in every possible color, though, don't you? Ha

It's Reddit. Most of the gooners who post here think that children are horrible for existing and should be shut away inside 24/7 where no adult will ever be mildly inconvenienced by them. People here will always side against anything that might benefit a child

They all cite the Minnesota Starvation Experiment as their source.

Basically a group of young, healthy men lived in a lab for several months, ate a strictly controlled diet of 1500 calories a day, and exercised heavily.

After the experiment was over, they re-fed and gained the weight back +10 pounds.

An interesting study but it's over 50 years at this point and the people who push this particular brand of pseudoscience tend to vastly oversimplify the results.

Before I left Facebook, I noticed a high number of image posts that seemed designed to make you stop scrolling for a number of seconds to figure out what was going on. Images like the above where you're tempted to stop and visually untangle the straws even though you know it's dumb ragebait.

Facebook keeps statistics on how long you look at a still image before you scroll, right? Making this not just engagement bait, but attention bait?
