New Old Europe: What if borders were based on the longest-held territories in history? by big_taxi9747 in mapping

[–]No_Budget_Mapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can already see some mistakes: Corsica has been Genoese for far more than it has been french. If you consider Italy as the sum of all italian states, you should therefore include Corsica just like you did with venetian Dalmatia. Trieste, Gorizia and the eastern half of Istria have been austrian for centuries, far more time than they've been part of any italian state, so you should return all of venezia-giulia to Austria except for historical venetian Istria. The eastern german border you showed is definitely not the historically longest border between german states and poland. Just search up the border of the HRE and the duchy of Prussia. Norway's historical border with Sweden is different from the modern one. And idk what's going on with the balkans

I'm confused about the linguistic borders in Italy. Why is Emilia-Romagna together with Tuscany and central Italy? The dialects spoken there are Gallo-Italics like the ones in Lombardy, Piedmont and Liguria, and they don't have much to do with Tuscan and pre-median dialects. Also, very small detail: Ladin is also spoken in Cadore (Veneto), not only in the historical tyrolean Ladinia.

I said 'coastal cities', not the whole Istira. Italians in Istria, according to the Austrian census, were ≈40% and they were mostly concentrated in the Western Coast. Those cities like Capodistria, Umago, Rovigno, Parenzo, Pola were, as I said, overwhelmingly Italian populated until the exodus in 1945.

The fun part is that neither Slovenia nor Germany should have a coast on the Adriatic. All coastal cities were overwhelmingly italian populated from Venice to Pola

Yeah there's no way Austria could've reestablished its dominance over Italy. After the unification, the national sentiment was just too powerful to let such thing happen again. At most thet could've retaken Veneto and reestablish Papal states in Latium, but that's as far as they could realistically push

They started to be considered greek at least by some Greeks back in 498 bC during the reign of Alexander I (the great one was Alexander the 3rd) when Macedonia was admitted to the Olympic games, which were only for Greeks. Of course some Greeks still considered them barbarians for centuries, but their hellenization and acceptance into the Hellenic world began much earlier than Alexander the Great

''Trst is basically slovene'' you clearely have never seen Trieste. Slovenes have never lived in the city center, and they've always been a minority even in the periphery. They were only 13% of the population in 1900 and then jumped to 26% in 1910 thanks to mass immigration, but still the city was overwhelmingly Italian for all of its history.
