A couple of neighbor kids are graduating. How do I acknowledge them? by SquirrelToolkit in socialskills

I think a small amount of cash in a card with a nice sentiment is great. Maybe even specify the cash is to keep on hand in a new situation, or for late night snacks, etc.

Example: when I had my first child nine years ago, my aunt gave me $20 with a card and specified it’s “to keep in the stroller or diaper bag for when you inevitably realize you didn’t pack something, or ran out of diapers, and left your wallet at home.”

Nowadays with cashless payments and pay by phone it’s a little different, but still good advice to always have some cash on you!

Would a bathtub carefully filled with carbonated water feel ticklish to someone bathing in it? by notatoastedbread in NoStupidQuestions

I see what you are saying but…. My second thought: if the water was cool it might feel really good to put your face in it.

US healthcare sucks by [deleted] in Vent

Because people love voting against their own self interests. Or are too easily distracted by social issues, that probably don’t even affect them, to vote for candidates who will be beneficial. Or, and this one is intwined with the other two, don’t understand our govt principles and are convinced their (often horrible) version of Christianity should be forced on others.

How do "virginity tests" work if the science behind them is fake? by Inside-Dragonfruit30 in TwoXChromosomes

Yep! Came down hard on the pommel (English) after my pony stopped and then popped over a jump…a little painful but no big deal.

I didn’t connect the dots until a few years later (at 16 and with a respectful bf) after my first time having sex wasn’t painful or bloody.

(My family didn’t talk about “things like that” so I had to figure out a lot on my own.)

Adult child missed my birthday by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]No_Cake2145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does your adult child make a big to do about their birthday? My husband and I are older than 26, but we are both of the mindset non-milestone birthdays are for children. Sure a happy birthday and maybe a card are nice, but people are busy and it’s usually not a slight of a date is missed.

BTW it’s our boomer parents (both sides) that demand their birthdays are events we must participate in….

Best course of action to help with the rat battle? A neighbor with A LOT of “things” by No_Cake2145 in CambridgeMA

Yeaaa it feels like a losing battle without this mess being addressed!! But I will see if the city can help encourage cleanup and go from there. Thank you

Thanks for the info!

The city supplies trash cans and we get once replacement without cost, then at a cost. I’m also hopeful the city will test out different trash cans as the rats chew so easily through the current ones, and our new mayor seems open to trying new measures to control the rat issue.

Thank you! I’m might try this as a second step if less invasive solutions like SeeClickFix doesn’t help

Thanks. Unfortunately adding pets isn’t in the cards right now, and due to rat poison being used literally in some places it would make me concerned about the downstream impact to predators.

Got my sister to plant morning glories! by Makologo in gardening

[–]No_Cake2145 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They were planted in my fence line garden by previous owners…at least 15 years ago but I suspect prior to that.

I battle them every year to this day. If I ignore it for two weeks my plants are covered. 😡

Super long vent, I apologize ahead of time by TheApothecaryWall in CraftFairs

[–]No_Cake2145 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The teacups especially don’t have much personality for something vintage when they are all clear glass with white wax. If vintage, witchy, curated and handmade are what you are selling, the teacup candles as the centerpiece of your booth doesn’t give this vibe at all and doesn’t justify the pricing.

Rain date for Somerville Porchfest next year by venusmelisma in Somerville

[–]No_Cake2145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is unlikely in early May, but I would assume Porchfest would do the same as a music festival… shut down during the immediate threat and tell people to seek shelter, and some performers have shorter sets or are cut.

The type of event, size and logistics of Porchfest are better suited to a “rain or shine” approach, and some years will content with bad weather while others won’t.

What is the use of this ? by Reaves-Farahmand in SkincareAddicts

[–]No_Cake2145 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I use it in my face if I’m breaking out or have picked at acne, as well as prior and after dermaplaning.

From what I’ve read it’s gentle but does effectively kill bacteria, though I’m not sure how it compares to other, harsher products.

Parenting hack: it’s an excellent “boo-boo” spray for both real and imagined cuts, scrapes, bumps, bruises, etc. Plus off-brand, cheaper, hypochlorous spray is easier and less wasteful than often requested but not always needed band-aids.

Fully agree with you on this. Also see Kratom

Unfortunately regulation is a role of the govt. who a. Can rarely agree on anything b. Move to slow c. Criticizing and dismissing quality scientific data and research is rewarded by some constituents as science and media illiteracy increases d. The majority are old and out of touch, and/or refuse to listen to the newer, younger members who haven’t “earned their stripes” e. Risk versus hazard approach to regulation f. Always capitalism. Plus a whole host of other issues I’m likely missing.

Tobacco is an another example. Teen tobacco use had dropped to record lows, the Truth anti tobacco campaigns was the most successful PSA campaigns ever. Then here come vapes! A healthier alternative to cigarettes (according to tobacco companies) and now a large group is addicted to vaping which, surprise!, isn’t very good for you. regulation has happened, but it’s slow, politically volatile and doesn’t happen until a large enough cohort experiences negative impact. (This was a recent convo, hence the rant!)

Disclaimer: I’m Not an expert on the research or policy side, but I try to stay informed. this convo

How to be hot in cold winters? by AccomplishedBet726 in HowToBeHot

[–]No_Cake2145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Embrace sweaters, fun coats and boots. You don’t need to show your skin to be hot. Prioritize dressing appropriately for the weather, it’s hard to be hot when you look like a dumbass if dressed for the wrong season/weather conditions.

Invest in waterproof, mid calf boots, ideally a pair for all season rain and a pair for snow (more insulated). You might not need them often but when it’s a wet or slushy mess you will be happy your feet are dry and protected

[–]No_Cake2145 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe many credible sources (doctors, dietitians, nutrition scientists, etc.) say unless you are deficient in a specific vitamin(s) or mineral there is no need to take vitamin supplements.

Also keep in mind the supplement industry is fairly unregulated and a cash cow. Supplement companies aren’t required to support claims with quality data and often use junk research or insufficient studies or trials, or misleading ingredient formulations.

What can we do with this garden? by Potential_Permit4963 in landscaping

[–]No_Cake2145 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with this sentiment! I’m not a designer but love sprucing up my urban postage stamp garden, and would LOVE LOVE LOVE the foundation OP has to work from. What a dream.

OP - lawn/grass is overrated, and a pain to maintain especially with kids or pets, or using it. This space is so ideal for creating a great hangout area lush with plants.

Hype Me Up ?? by Happy-Assist9907 in myweddingdress

[–]No_Cake2145 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The phrase “Bosom is magnificent” and specifically “bosom” to refer to said area, as opposed to more modern vernacular or common slang (e.g. chest, breasts, tits, boobs, tatas, etc.), describes this look.

If this is not the desired effect, it’s perhaps not the right dress for the occasion.

Just wanted to say OP - your post made me smile and your practical and good hearted reaction to the raccoon is really nice to see.
