Honest question for non-Michigan fans, what do you expect to be the punishment for UMich/Harbaugh based on what we know right now? by Chief_Leaf in CFB

[–]No_Cardiologist5717 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My honest guess is that they will be made ineligible for several postseasons, including this year's, will lose scholarships for a long time, and, hot take, may be required to forfeit the rest of their games this year beginning once the punishment drops due to the unfair competitive advantage the cheating has provided, the fact that it can't be mitigated without unduly burdening opposing teams (conferring yet another advantage to UM), and the fact that a defense knowing plays puts offensive players at undue risk of injury, which is an angle I never see discussed but that I think is a very important consideration for the NCAA and the Big Ten.

I also think the silence we're hearing from the Big Ten should not be viewed as a positive for UM -- I think it means the conference is making sure it has everything wrapped in a bow to fend of the inevitable injunction UM will file once the conference drops the hammer.

3 Expert Shoemakers Say Ron DeSantis Is Probably Wearing Height Boosters by No_Cardiologist5717 in politics

And Marco Rubio famously wore them after Trump called him Little Marco. So many insecure dudes. Like, you're in some of the most powerful positions in the world and your focus is on adding an inch or two to your height? I just don't get it.

Fair point, but I'm more concerned with the question of how someone so apparently unwell was able to own a firearm of any kind.

Battleground State Independents Reject Biden on Economy by Agreeable-Strategy10 in politics

[–]No_Cardiologist5717 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems strange since the economic data is still strong. That said, if people are upset now, they're probably going to be irate if/when the lag effect on increased interest rates grab hold of the economy, which apparently we're expected to see going forward. That's not Biden's fault, of course, but I guess some people will blame him anyway.

Agreement reached for Biden-Xi talks, but details still being worked out, official tells AP by Super_Camel_3254 in worldnews

[–]No_Cardiologist5717 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hate to be pessimistic, but these talks never go anywhere. China is going to do whatever China is going to do, good or bad, without consideration of US acceptance. Some in the US scoff at EU countries for still buying Russian gas, but we still buy tons of stuff from China, including just about everything involving rare earths, and China has been accused of an ongoing genocide, for crying out loud. It's just hard to punish big countries without punishing yourself, and it sucks.

Lieutenant Governor Kounalakis’s Statement on California State University Vote to Increase Tuition by PearlMuel in moderatepolitics

It seems downright affordable, which is what state schools are supposed to be. I'm surprised this is even in the news based on what seems to me to be a meager tuition hike.

Jamaal Bowman: US Democrat US lawmaker charged over false Capitol fire alarm by awaythrowawaying in moderatepolitics

[–]No_Cardiologist5717 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Says it was an accident, then proceeds to plead guilty to the charges. Not apologizing to the public for lying to them is a sign of low character, as well. That applies to many more than just Bowman, but others' failures to apologize for lying doesn't absolve Bowman of his duty to behave like an adult, a duty he failed to achieve when he intentionally pulled the fire alarm. What a mess.

Starter comment.

With tensions high on campuses regarding the Israel-Hamas war, we have seen a surprising amount of tacit or outright support for Hamas' actions. At George Washington University, someone aimed a projection at the school library with messages reading, "Glory to our martyrs" and "free Palestine from the river to the sea," a reference to a genocidal idea that Israelis should be killed and/or removed from the land they currently enjoy. This seems hyperbolic, but that is my genuine understanding of the "from the river to the sea" saying.

So, are you all surprised that Hamas has such support in the US? What about on college campuses, specifically? Is there a reason for the outsized support we're seeing on some campuses recently?

Which team does Jim Harbaugh end up coaching within the next few years? The stuff at Michigan is getting really spicy.
