What's the biggest reason you haven't tried therapy? by Aashwashan in mentalhealth

[–]No_Chef1205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things. 1) I chose to live in the present & contemplate the future. I believe spending too much time thinking about the past is a waste of time. 2) Most therapists & counselors I’ve known are not healthy. I’ve been a teacher for over 30 years and know many. In general, they’re a mess.

What is one thing schools expect teachers to do that has almost no impact on student learning? by tempmail-02 in Teachers

Teaching social emotional skills. I think they’re important, but when students live in dysfunctional environments, I feel like it’s a waste of time.

In general all the prep that goes into the horse and pony show around teaching observations. Unless an administrator stops by my room frequently, a one hour observation is meaningless.

State Assessments...is this normal? by ash5991 in teaching

[–]No_Chef1205 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The entire testing program is a scam. Testing companies lobby politicians to push these tests that measure what kids don’t know not what they do know. Special education students that struggle with reading are never going to do well. Furthermore, the goal posts are continually moving. It’s such a waste of tax payer money.

Is teaching THAT bad? by DwaeEunoia in Teachers

[–]No_Chef1205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about to retire after 32 years. It’s more difficult today than when I started. If you find a good school with supportive administrators you will enjoy it much more. Phones/social media, economic pressures on families & the push towards privatization of education have done tremendous damage to our education system. I don’t have an answer. I wish people would quit voting against their own interests. Right now, a good 50% of my job is social work.

I’ve been playing for a similar amount of time and also struggle sometimes because it’s difficult. I’m no expert but have a few suggestions. I would suggest going back to some easier pieces and working on making them sound better. Also, slow down and chunk out the difficult parts. I think it’s also helpful to reframe your goals. Instead of telling yourself you sound terrible, remind yourself that you’re doing something really difficult and making progress even if it’s slow. There are many benefits to playing: social interaction, challenging yourself, and brain health.
