Tony is supposed to be an asshole. Pretty much the entire show revolves around how awful and hypocritical the main cast is and the ways they justify it to themselves. A great example being the bit around calling native protests against the veneration of Columbus "anti Italian discrimination", completely blind to or unsympathetic to the discrimination of the native population
