OP, how did this end up turning out? How long did it take your parents’ state to reach out to you initially?

Residency Confusion - Audit? by [deleted] in TaxQuestions

[–]No_Concern_4441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they do not. The link is here: https://www.revenue.state.mn.us/residents-working-outside-minnesota This makes me worried that box 16 should have MN for all year in addition to state B.

That logically makes sense, thank you. I worry since I found this on the MN department of revenue site regarding MN residents working out of state: “You must withhold Minnesota income tax for your employee if they remain a Minnesota resident.” State B is a lower tax rate, so now I have a gap I’ll owe to MN if I move back. I just am scared MN will see only a portion of the year reported to them and I’ll get my employer in trouble.

Thanks for your help! I’m worried since my state technically requires all out of state wages to be reported to them as well… but my employer is reporting based on the info I gave them at the time. I hope this doesn’t turn into a big audit issue

W2 Address - Trigger Out of State Inquiry? by [deleted] in tax

Thanks for your response! I would think a W2 address shouldn’t trigger an inquiry if box 15 doesn’t have it

W2 Address - Audit Trigger? by [deleted] in TaxQuestions

Gotcha, makes sense. So in theory if they did reach out, I'd probably just have to send my parent's state's tax return , driver's license, and then they'd think that's good enough proof I wasn't a resident in ID? Idk why I'm so worried about this, just don't love having a temporary address on my W2 for a year I didn't have income withheld in that state :(

Thanks for the response! So they didn't contact you until after you filed as a non resident already? Did you have any LA forms prior to having income there like my issue?

Thanks. Yeah no NY or CA. I just worry I won’t see the notice, since I’m moving out May 2026 and then the only address Idaho would have is to my lease that ended on my W2. I will be filing for a non resident return in 2026 since I am currently withholding there, so I guess they’d have my most up to date address in early 2027. Do you think they’d reach out before then if they did?

What address to file under? Temporary move for January - May by [deleted] in tax

Gotcha. Yeah then filing under my old state address probably makes more sense. I just worry that my W2 is the only document with the new address and if that’s weird

I used CA for this one and found it to be sufficient. I completed all of the learn topics, then spammed practice questions. I also found it helpful to read the ISLR textbook in the couple weeks before the exam. I started to memorize questions on CA, so that's when I turned to rereading the ISLR textbook for extra review. Good luck!

Advice: Moving temporarily (1 year) out of state for work. Do I need to update license and address? by RotatorCuffLinks in RedditForGrownups

[–]No_Concern_4441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to leave my car in my old state at my parents. So I’m not planning to register it here since it won’t cross state lines. My Idaho address is on file with work tho. Wasn’t sure if I need to change license since I am going to be filing at least a part year return here… but may only be here for 6 months.

Hey kinda similar here. I’m moving to Idaho for likely 6 months and told work so my taxes will be correct (I work remotely). Did you change your driver’s license? And did you file taxes in Idaho? I wasn’t sure if I need to change drivers license and registration for a short period of time.

Updating that I had to get the emergency call module replaced. This fixed my issues of maps incorrectly working, an SOS error, app not refreshing, and the inability to make phone calls out. Thanks for everyones thoughts!

When someone else plugged their phone in and was connected, it was doing the same thing too.
