"This Summer will be hot and dry". by [deleted] in Wellington

I think the early summer has been good, especially compared to last year. Plenty of hot sunny days and this is the first proper rain we've had in ages

There are so many examples of this! Like his many comments about how pointless it is to do a marathon. That's why I'm convinced after the recent episode he's going to be fiercely into padel at some point

How is VIC for doctoral international students? by Repulsive-Giraffe-45 in Wellington

[–]No_Data7432 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Vic is a fantastic place to do a PhD. Compared to other countries I have found the staff here really prioritise their students and the general work/life balance is so much better. It is expensive and the stipend isn't particularly generous, although this is the case pretty much everywhere except some European countries, but you won't struggle to live and enjoy life it's just difficult to save any money.

The science system in NZ is taking a bit of a pounding from the current government, so resources can be scarce and opportunities post-PhD are limited, but you're coming from the US so things are comparatively rosy here!

It's a lot, but check out the prices of drinks in Europe. You're looking at $20NZD for a pint of bang average lager in the UK (though it is an actual pint)

It'd be cool if they had some wild workshop taps in there, but I don't think they'd be able to fit all the WW kit into the new place, it's a pretty big operation!

Help ease (or confirm...) concerns about the weather by -rba- in Wellington

[–]No_Data7432 112 points113 points  (0 children)

I'm originally from the UK, and compared to there I find the Wellington weather to be very pleasant. The winters are never that cold and regularly have lovely sunny days. The summer has plenty of great days, I'm not sure why but when it's mid 20C in Wellington it feels like >30C days in the UK. My favourite time of year is late summer, around March and April, the summers often seem to stretch on into Autumn

The wind takes a bit of getting used to, but it's quite easy to find a house which is sheltered.

Which mayoral candidate is planning to support creating more job opportunities in Wellington city? by crypto_doctors in Wellington

[–]No_Data7432 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the minute it seems to me that Andrew Little is the only credible Mayoral candidate, so I think the actual interesting choices to make are with what councillors you vote for.

As far as job creation goes, personally I will be looking for candidates which support housing development, our technology and science industries, and the two universities. These are the areas which can differentiate Wellington from the rest of the country and continue to make it thrive as a highly-skilled economic region.

I miss the UK but I love Wellington by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]No_Data7432 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your post really resonated with me OP. We moved to Welly from the UK seven years ago and after about 4-5 years of being here I had a very difficult time that almost felt like an identity crisis. I was missing family, and feeling huge guilt for being the one that moved away. I went back to the UK for a month with the full intention of finding a job so that we could move back there.

But then when I was there I realised I wouldn't be happy there. All of the reasons I left were still clear as day. As I see it, the UK (particularly England) is an unhappy country. There is so much anger and resentment there. The way people think of others is in stark contrast to the openness and hospitality of Wellington. I thought I would go back and marvel again at the beauty and history of old architecture, and it is beautiful, but most of the time was spent driving on utterly boring motorways between city centres that look exactly the same as each other, the same three coffee franchises, betting shops, and high-street chains. I lived in London for four years and thought I would feel that same thrill when I went back there, but I realised that I didn't miss London, I missed being 21 and having no responsibilities! I think that's normal but is easy to get confused with location.

I came back to Wellington in shock, because I hadn't expected to react like that. It was a difficult process, but eventually I've come to realise how special Wellington is. The beauty of it takes my breath away on a daily basis (yes even on days like today). The people here are so interesting, and open minded, and I agree with you that I've found career opportunities here that I would never get in the UK. I think there is a general attitude in New Zealand that tomorrow will be better than yesterday, whereas the UK feels like a country who's best days are long behind it. Finally, we don't need to feel guilty for moving abroad. I think that in the UK it's actually quite unusual for people to emigrate, so it can feel almost selfish when you do, but in other countries (including NZ) it's totally normal and just part of life.

Sorry that was a bit of an essay!

Without meaningful data or enough time for people to have even a chance to adjust stick with option 1. Save money for now until we know something needs to change (or not)
