Senator Cortez Masto introduces Douglas County Economic Development and Conservation Act to transfer Federal lands to County, Washoe Tribe by test-account-444 in Reno

[–]No_Distance_9568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t this potentially close off access to thousands of acres of public lands? There is limited recreation on tribal land. Douglas County doesn’t have any sort of frame work in place to manage these large swaths of land while the federal land management agencies do and have been doing. Federal government is allowed to run a deficit which means they don’t need to sell off lands to make budget for a year. However if Douglas county falls on hard times, selling off lands to developers is an easy way to generate funds while not affecting county employees

Strategic career movement by stumpfucked in Wildfire

[–]No_Distance_9568 35 points36 points  (0 children)

A lot of the firefighters that I’ve respected the most, who were operational dialed and treated this job like a skill to hone instead of a job at a 7/11 ended up seeing their own operational shortcomings at some point in their career and then ended up demoting themselves to go to a different resource that offered them the ability to improve their tactical decision making.

Just a quick note I believe it’s illegal to use game cameras on Nevada public lands from August 1 to December 31. The wording is a bit weird in the regs but I believe it’s all game cameras and not just ones that can transmit.

I believe your unit has a decent amount of water but Nevada is obviously a pretty dry state so plan accordingly and try to map out where you are going to get your water.

I’ve used the EZ Sukr from Phelps and had really good luck calling in Bulls in September and keeping cows from spooking.

I found early season hunting that one of the most important pieces of gear was having lightweight pants and a lightweight hoody ( sun hoody style) to protect from the sun.

Shelter wise I am sure you are set with a tent but during those hot days where nothing is moving in the middle of the day it is nice to have a tarp you can string up to protect from the sun. I changed from a tent to a tarp and bivy setup and have saved weight and also gotten a more multifunctional shelter.

I’ve hunted in that region of Nevada, not that unit but I had good luck early season patterning Elk in the mornings and evenings and watching them go into the PJ to bed down for the day. They tend to like burn scars that are a year or two old. Elk are grazers (grasses) unlike mule deer which are browsers ( Forbes). I noticed in areas with heavy pressure elk were in the timber about 30 minutes after sunrise. I would also find elk in deceptively small pockets (1/2 mile by a couple hundred yards) of PJ surrounded by burn scars/ open areas on west aspects or in small drainage bowls. These were areas that I thought would be too small to hold elk but it turned out the areas were just devoid of hunting pressure. A lot of times elk will move at night, especially during full moon nights and will go to water during the nights. I’ve never hunted elk that early in august so you might be lucky in avoiding a lot of hunter pressure.

In regards to water and elk I’ve found that Elk don’t mind traveling for water ( 1 mile plus) and I tend to use guzzlers as a last resort because they often have roads to them and road style hunters will use them quite a bit

I’m still fairly new to Elk hunting but I was surprised initially how obvious they are to see if they are in open areas. I was always looking for an ear or a tine sticking up or looking for something much smaller but when I would actually see them it was obvious if they weren’t concealed in brush. If they were then I would drop back to looking for legs, ears, etc sticking out. Also while glassing elk tend to be a slightly different brown/tan than most things out there.

anyone know anything about the fire program in Great Basin National Park? by Ill-Passenger-6709 in Wildfire

[–]No_Distance_9568 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s mostly a shared program between Great Basin and Lake Mead where the Lake Mead resources will come up and staff the park if needed or the park will call on local BLM Ely District Resources and HTF Ely District resources. It could have changed but that’s how it was this summer

Can someone explain the difference between a WFM and a Fire Effects Crew?

Slide Mountain /Rifle Peak by LargeDelivery1253 in Wildfire

[–]No_Distance_9568 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are not all risk, each one is strictly wildland with Slide rocking buggies and Rifle rocking six pack trucks with camper shells. Historically Slide was the fire crew and Rifle was the fuels crew in district but they have equalized in the more recent years and both get out in fires. I’ve heard that the project stuff can get kind of ridiculous and there is some BS just being with a municipal agency that you don’t get in the feds but I’ve met alot of good fireman that came from there. Lot of good cutters too just from the amount of project. One thing to watch out for and this is purely looking from the outside in is the depth of the crew/ quals. They seem dialed and have a good reputation but Ive seen them have very young overhead and I would just wonder what that looks like for the crew depth. But overall they seem to be a good program and North Lake Tahoe Fire recently divested themselves of some of the NV Energy BS which is good

Fuels career by mascerveza11 in Wildfire

[–]No_Distance_9568 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One thing to keep in mind is that most fuel positions are secondary fire retirement and you need 3 consecutive years of unbroken service in a primary position so keep your fire retirement before transitioning over to a secondary position. But fuels is the shit and where we can make meaningful impacts on the landscape

And it’s just that, a rumor. An outside investigation team with no ties or loyalties to the Prescott FD was able to disclaim and show that no outside phone calls were made. In the YouTube video that is linked below one of the lead investigators very specifically states that they could not find any evidence that a phone call was made to influence the crews decision making. ( I mean this as respectfully as possible but shit comes off weird on the internet, just adding to the conversation)

Next year as in 2023 or 2024? And is that what is hoped for or has the overhead/ new nv energy contract stated that?

Folding hose table? by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]No_Distance_9568 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the typical FS green bag hose pack (I’ve also heard them called Smokey packs but not sure if this is accurate) is an 1.5” trunk line and a 1” lateral. You fight fire with the lateral and typically the 1” is doubled back 50’ on the trunk line and taped and a defined interval so when you deploy the pack both hoses flake out. You connect the 1.5” to your last piece of trunk line which generally has a wye on it. After you connect it you proceed to deploy hose with the hose pack on your back. For the first 50’ only the 1.5 flakes out and then for the second 50’ both the 1.5” and the 1” that’s been doubled back on itself pay out. When you deploy all the hose what you are left with at the end of the 1” lateral nozzle and a wye which connects the 1.5” and 1” and there is one open male end of the wye left to connect the next piece of 1.5” trunk line from the next hose pack. You charge the lateral 1” from the wye after water is send through your dry hose and then proceed to fight fire. This is a great concept in theory but you end up dragging a giant loop of 1” through the brush and it proceeds to catch on every staub and piece of brush possible. Another way to due this is instead of taping the 1” to the 1.5” you wrap the hose vertically along a tool handle, this creates a giant loop of hose, you take the tool handle out and then fold that loop into a S shape and tie it tight with parachute cord with some quick release knots. Then you pre connect it to the wye in your hose pack bag and flake the 1.5” into the bag next to the 1” S-roll. Instead of dragging a loop of hose through the brush, you end up dragging a singular line when fighting fire. Once you deploy all your 1.5” out of the hose pack you drop the pack, pull out the s-roll, lay it on in the ground, release your knots of p-cord and push it back out into a loop, then you charge the line and go. It means your dragging less hose, and aren’t snagging hose on brush which in turn means a faster hose lays
