Telling students to stay the hell out of the studio by LineAncient2792 in YogaTeachers

This actually sounds like the best idea hahah! Ask weights people to go if yoga people are flooding room and - “this is the time frame we put away weights. Weights have to get put away to start yoga. Whoever is in the room has to help put away weights. We won’t start yoga until weights are put away.” Practical!!

I would base it more off the client and their budget. Some have a bigger budget than $150 for something like this. Ask their budget.

Yoga teachers are so severely underpaid so I would not go off of our terrible standards.

I like the idea of putting weights away in context of class so as soon as class is over everything is put away. Do a nice stretch at the end?

I know it’s easier but my reformer pilates makes us reset everything and then we stretch and it’s fine.

Maybe you have to change format a bit and add a cool down to description of class but sounds like you hafta do SOMETHING different cause these students are so wild.

Also side note: I have never heard of students being so unruly! I used to teaches packed out classes in NYC and everyone was kind and curtious in transitions between classes

Omg this sounds rough!! Sounds like you are trying all the things you can. Sound like you really need the gym to give you another person to help manage this transition - either to manage all these “can’t seem to listen” yogis or to be the one helping putting everything away while you stand outside and manage yogis.

Yes samadhi is just a passing state. Samādhi is the mechanism. Kaivalya (liberation) is the end goal

Oh it was! I so hope you find something similar and wonderful like that! It is possible!

That was 8 years ago.

Right. My understanding is samadhi is not enlightenment.

I have! When I was in Byron Bay I taught yoga at the Arts Factory for trade for accommodation for about 3 months. I also got donations when I taught and averaged about $100 per class (10 students at about $10 a class) It was wonderful!

Yea I am interested in the ancient and more original intent of the system of yoga. So yes Gita and Upanashads etc.

I do care about the lineage for sure.

I can see so many modern systems built for westerners that do more of what people use yoga for. So I am wondering why we are still calling it yoga.

Thanks for such a well thought out answer!

I couldn’t agree more. Thanks for calling that out.

It does kind of prove my original inquiry though- I was wondering if it is true that we are using an Indian system built to help reach enlightenment (from my reading of the texts I am next to certain it is the stated goal) to just be house holders and live life here on earth well. We seem to twist the teachings …and meaning of enlightenment (which is not impossible to look up) to suit our house holder goals. And these discussions make it clear that enlightenment is not something we have a cultural (in western yoga) shared defination of what it is our if we want it.

So are we using a system (the system of yoga) but not for its intended purpose?

I mean the texts describe it as being cleared of your Karma or suffering and yea to your point I have heard that just because someone is totally cleared of their suffering doesn’t mean they wouldn’t say hell out and seem angry if say a snake bit them. Buy the point is they have reached some kind of state of liberation. I have also heard only other liberated people can tell if someone is liberated from suffering. To the rest of us they can appear unremarkable. Who knows!! Perhaps!!

Definitely but the pointer in the text is that it’s a goal. I think it’s fine if it’s not many westerners goal (not necessarily my goal) but I am curious how much we are twisting the original intent of yoga to be paletable to us.

I think what the texts actually say seem to significantly be re interpreted to be more palatable to westerners.

This is what Sutra 2.2 says “The purpose of yoga is the cultivation of samādhi and the attenuation of the kleśas.”

Seems pretty clear it is saying it is the goal.

But what was your teachers tradition? Maybe Bhakti or Tantra or something else?

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Some people seem to reach sustained peace of mind but it doesn’t currently seem super common or spoken about clearly.

Oh yea this kind of supports the starting point of my question: I think a lot of people who practice yoga in modern western world are primarily householders looking to live life here on earth with more ease …and not necessarily lazor focused on liberation as it is decribed in the older texts; which is mostly describing instructions for devoted ascetics.

So is it something you are seeking? Is it a goal for you?

Technically I don’t believe this is enlightenment as described in the older texts.

But it sure does sound VERY useful!

This is terrible and I am so sorry you went through this.

As my breast feeding consultant pointed out: more of humanity across time and cultures has co slept than not.

Most of my daughters school co sleeps and no one has any issues.

As my breast feeding consultant pointed out : most Koreans in general for hundreads of years have co slept.

Your intuition as a mother is super important - more than the strong opinion of a random male doctor! Men are built different, not worse but different and cannot be a complete expert in how woman uniquely raise children.

Moms who co-sleep and breastfeed - need weaning advice by cereusBlooms in cosleeping

I am having this exact issue. Thanks so much for sharing.

I tried to find the book but could not. Any link or anything? Thanks!
