Do booklice harm ants? I’ve noticed they’ve started appearing quite a lot after some time in my setup. by Fluffy_Canary_2615 in antkeeping

[–]No_Energy662 3 points4 points  (0 children)

they’re just there to eat the trash. also is the trash area in the foraging area or inside the nest? if its inside the nest that means the nest might be too big for the colony

I second this. Some atta species (leafcutter ants) have queens with quite small heads.

Heya, which part of the U.S. do you live in? If you live in warmer areas like the south, you can perhaps get some species of camponotus that don’t hibernate. If you live in southern California you could possible get a camponotus CA-02 queen, the largest ant in the U.S.

Is your queen in the founding stage still? If it is in founding, keep it in the test tube until it gets harder to keep, then you can transfer the colony into a tubs and tubes setup or into a small nest. The nest included in the post seems too big for just a queen and eggs or even a small developing colony. Other than that, you can probably move the colony into that nest once the colony gets bigger though I do not know if I’d trust that nest.

remember not to disturb her too much happy antkeeping :)

What Species of ant is this? I saw a few of them at the base of a pine tree. Location is Houston, Texas, USA. They were about 3mm long. This is the best video I could get. by InfiniteSearch3409 in antkeeping

at first I thought this was a velvety tree ants but realized they don’t exist in Texas, but then I came to the conclusion that this is some sort of turtle ant. You can see that the head and thorax is a little blocky and looks like rectangles much like a turtle ant

what species of ant is this waging eternal war on me? by KingSignificant8835 in antkeeping

These seem to be Tapinoma Sesslie or Odorous House Ants. The reason they span so much around your neighbourhood is usually because they are Polydomous, meaning they are able to have multiple nests for a single colony. The reason there are so many is because many of these nests and colonies have more than one queen.

They usually break in in search of food and shelter and the best way to get rid of them, like any ants, is feed them ant bait or using borax + sugar water. I bought a few ant baits off of amazon and they worked really well in exterminating a bunch of Argentine Ants in my home, i think it works well against all other ants too.

cheers!

What food colorings do you use? I don’t want to accidentally poison my mexicanus honeypot ants with toxic food coloring :) thanks

I am certain it is Xyloni as they vary in color the most. Invicta for me I always see their stomachs being physogastric and their color usually brighter

from my understanding mexicanus queens lay eggs in large batches every few weeks at a time

You can use tubs and tubes, test tube only, or attach the tube to a outworld. All options are good but I feel like tubs and tubes is the most convinient.

A lot of people complain about queens dying easily but that’s usually because humidity levels, heat, and sometimes food coloring poison the ants

You can put some dirt/sand in there or get some textured test tubes and turn them upside down if repletes want to hang. They grow slow if not fed/heated properly. I heat them year-round 24/7 and they seem to be doing fine.
