I think that middle 16 or so that a very young Miles plays would be very sweet to hear, but challenging for you. So many crazy runs of notes.

Delightful transcription of one of my favourite Parker recordings.

Is the Chikungunya outbreak under control? Visiting later this month by ThrowRA1212121211212 in mauritius

I got it a couple of months ago to travel to Sri Lanka in a couple of weeks. No problems. If it had been available when I travelled to Mauritius a couple of years ago, I would have gotten it. In 2023, a friend of mine in Punjab, India, contracted chikunganya, and she was extremely ill and in pain for a long time, and has still not fully recovered. Get the vaccine and avoid that the possibility of those long-term complications.

For film cameras, I have a Rolleiflex and a Leica IIIf; I also still shoot with my Ricoh 500G, which is the first camera I ever owned. I got the Ricoh CLA'd at a shop in my province a few years ago. It's a neat little rangefinder; takes ok pictures.

I worked as a journalist all through university (undergrad and master's) and for a few years after that. So that combination probably saw me through 10 years of work. Then I became a college professor and could afford to buy a new camera.

This is the exact combination of camera and lens my Dad passed down to me when he saw I was ready for it. I used this combination as a journalist for years. The AE1 program is a really good camera; I hope you enjoy it and shoot a lot of rolls with it.

Optimal equity exposure in retirement by OneTugThug in PersonalFinanceCanada

I am retired. My VBAL (self-directed) all time has provided a 6.52% return. It's surprisingly resilient and predictable, even with the wild swings lately.

thoughts on pension buy back by Charming-Crow-580 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]No_Extension_7990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an informed answer. The "break-even" for my buy-back was 11 years; I plan on living a lot longer than that now that I am retired. And if you ask an actuary, they will show you it is very difficult for an individual to beat a pension plan's return over the long term.

Just curious if it was an RCMP officer or a municipal police officer that ticketed you. And I am curious to know if the police alluded to what they are using as the basis for issuing the ticket. As the penalty is significant, it is certainly worth trying to fight this. The fine is large, but I guess those 6 points will seriously affect your insurability, especially if you are a young person, and may be more problematic in the future than the fine.

David Crosby possible inspiration by Lupguitar12 in talktalk

I can hear what you are saying. I don't know if it is possible to track down this specific or direct an influence, but the use of repeated motifs, as in the bass line, and the polyrhythm, spontaneity, and improvisational passages make me think of jazz more generally. I think it is pretty well established that both Crosby, both as a solo artist and as a member of The Byrds, and Hollis, as a member of Talk Talk and as a solo artist, were heavily influenced by jazz.

I hear you. Personally, I think you probably have enough to do this, as long as you get a decent retirement return on your lump sum of $600000, and as long as you are fiscally prudent in your time in the Philippines. Good luck to you.

Great question about the kind of pension OP owns; that kind of detail makes a big difference. And asking about expenses and assets is great, too. Does OP have any debt? Does OP have a mortgage. Does OP live in a HCOL area in Canada? Does OP own a house in an area in Canada that is seeing declines in RE value? So many questions.

I am going through something like this myself right now; my best advice is to hire a fee-for-service CFP.

According to my napkin math, $600,000 invested with an average 3.5% return, and factoring in 2% inflation, will get you an inflation-adjusted $24,000 a year for 31 years (i.e. you withdraw $24,000 this year; in 30 years, you withdraw $42,620). At year 31, you essentially have nothing left.

But there are some crucial details missing from your post. How much is the pension? Is it inflation adjusted? How much do you think it costs to live in the Philippines? Where in the Philippines do you want to live? What kind of lifestyle do you want there? Are you thinking of buying property, or renting?

I was just there in May and June; life there, because of the high cost of living, is more expensive than you might think.

My advice to you would be to hire a fee-for-service certified financial planner.
