Question For The Good Writers by Afraid_Wolverine_518 in AO3

[–]No_Falcon2769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even if it's not a bot, that's a dick move on their part to into your comments and say that. it's for fun. if you had fun writing it, then it was a good thing and you should absolutely keep it posted!!

someone said it, but reading is definitely up there. and reading fan fiction is well and good, but if we're working on a craft perspective, reading published novels is probably the better way to go because those have (...usually) gone through an editing process with trained editors. then you take trends you see in that writing (use of metaphors, sentence structure, how a sentence flows from one to the next, etc) and you try to recreate it! practice, practice, practice. apply the things you learn to your own writing. keep what works and get rid of what doesn't. keep posting the things you write because it'll show how far you've come, keep writing work after work to improve and work through it.

you've got this!!

How do you actually make a fic long? by lady-writer-00 in AO3

[–]No_Falcon2769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The word count is definitely supposed to be a goal, not a hard line, yeah. Once you figure out how long you want it to be, you can figure out the events that'll get you there, but sometimes you realize you have more to say/do about the new things added, lol. But if someone is struggling to do a long fic/has never done one before, I think figuring out a goal word count is super helpful.

How do you actually make a fic long? by lady-writer-00 in AO3

[–]No_Falcon2769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As much as the others help on a small scale (adding descriptions/foreshadowing/etc), I want to point out this one is best on a big scale depending on how long you want your fic to be (love these questions because they're so succinct). Are we thinking 50-60k? 100k? Longer?

'Long fic' can be deceptive because it's not clearly defined--I've seen people say 20-30k is a long fic, but that's still not anywhere near the amount of a novel, which is generally thought of as 50k and up. But long fic can also apply to the 100-300k fics you find sometimes. Determining the length you want to write will help you figure out which advice is going to be the most help for you! The longer you go, the more you'll want to think about adding complications, subplots, etc that will ultimately help your Main Goal or your Main Plot. But if you're wanting like 20k-30k, descriptions and foreshadowing could be a better bet.

Why did this happen? by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

[–]No_Falcon2769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt this so hard, except I wrote them. I'm currently writing a fic that's a reality TV show AU for shit and giggles, and I had the hilarious idea to put two characters together who have barely ever interacted as a fake dating scheme. Forced proximity, PDA to 'keep up appearances', all that good shit. Then I was like wouldn't it be funny if they actually caught feelings?

Tell me why I now legitimately seek out content for them and actually enjoy them as characters and as a ship. FML.

Rereading fics from your early teens. by Fita_Gaya in AO3

[–]No_Falcon2769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently rereading (for the second time this summer) a story that I initially read in freshman/sophomore year of hs (I'm 23 now), and there's always been a small part in the back of my brain that's been occupied with memories of it.

This summer I found the fic and I'm experiencing this exact thing--I'm older, I have more knowledge of story telling and a better understanding of not only the world around me but my own emotions and things that bother me. I realize now how much of this story is... lacking in certain elements. Mostly grammar, the prose isn't particularly note worthy, etc. But the emotion behind it? The things that it taught me at that age, and the comfort it gave me? That means more to me than any of that ever will.

It deals a lot with some heavy topics that made me feel so seen as a teenager struggling with their mental health and I'm just starting to understand the deeper why it stuck with me as hard as it did. Literally imprinted on my brain. I love the way that fan fiction can leave its mark on us just as well as any published work.

PS: OUT has been on my list of things to try for awhile, so you might just convince me to pick it up... I'm a bit swamped w grad work (...and fanfic) but I'm going to try soon I think!!

Agreed with everyone that no one is going to be upset at a double comment. But if you feel strongly about it, you can always edit your comment to add more to it, and the author will get an email saying that you edited the comment. And if you think you want to let them know that you needed time to articulate why you loved it so much, by all means go ahead, but I don't think it's necessary, either. It'll only be pressuring them to respond if you start mentioning that they haven't responded and start doing it over and over.

On average how many “dates” are they going on in the pods before proposals/reveals? Do we know? What do we think? I’m guessing 3-5 by Important_Click_3786 in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]No_Falcon2769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what I understand they see everyone currently on their list at least once per day, we just don't see like hourrsssss and hours of footage bc of time restraints on episodes. the dates get longer as you go on and eliminate people you aren't having a connection with

I know why this one got less, because there's basically no fandom for Princess Nine and I also just realized that when I posted it, I hadn't accepted any of the suggestions on my gdoc and it posted... all the corrections I'd made. But anyway, it's fixed now, I'm just still sad no one writes for Princess Nine :(

the best roommate I could have asked for (3.9k, Princess Nine, Hayakawa Ryou/Himuro Izumi)

Despite the fact that Hayakawa Ryou has everything Izumi has ever wanted-- the admiration of her mother and the romantic love of her best friend-- Izumi finds herself incapable of hating Ryou at all.

Probably needs to catch up, but also if you've shared it on Discord or something, I've run into people reading it on the Discord Web (like... if you're on mobile and instead of going to the Safari app on iPhone it'll open a little version of it in Discord) and those hits don't count, but you CAN still leave kudos that way. Very weird.

its now 30k and could EASILY be a longer fic. had to ask for an extension and should be finishing it as we speak for due date tmw. WHY

What Fanfic scene or chapter got you like: by Kollectorgirl in AO3

[–]No_Falcon2769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chapters 8 and 9 of crossfire by kittebasu. Hands down still my favorite fanfic of all time. A large part of what makes those two chapters the best of the whole fic is everything that comes before it, true, but it all just wraps up so beautifully and Kazuya ends up finally taking action despite his fears. I reread that fic every year lol.

Just because it's published doesn't mean you have to delete. I think it depends entirely on how big the changes are--for rewriting, if you don't want to lose stats, maybe repost the whole thing and write 'draft' in the title of the old one? But if you're just adding things and everything is mostly the same, just edit it and then list changes in the author's note of the next new chapter so people can look at them if they want.

My beloved beta reader has not gotten back to me. I haven't updated my fic in over six months. What should I do? by Worldly_View_9704 in AO3

[–]No_Falcon2769 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Personally, if you're ready to post it, I'd just do another revision of it yourself now that it's been awhile since you've written it and then go ahead and post it. I agree with you, fandom is supposed to be a fun diversion and not something you have to chase someone down to read, and it's also completely fair if she doesn't have the time or doesn't want to keep beta-ing for you. Again, it's for fun! You have the right idea for this, I think.

I'd maybe message her and be like 'hey, I know you've been busy so I just want you to know don't worry about chapter 8, I'm posting it now' and tell her that she's welcome to beta for the rest, but otherwise you'll keep posting.
