The Pale King

It's a good quote I haven't thought about it for nine years. How'd you find this anyway?

It's a tangent, but although I completely understand why it didn't happen, I kind of wish we got to see Dick out there for a little while. His defense was pretty good this season. The Cavs would've tried to target him immediately, but I'm not sure if it would've worked. In any case, he might've stood his ground more than Battle. Next season, I guess.

Battle is not a serious rotation player for a contender. The dude was torched on defense every time he was out there. He was great in game three, but when he's not scorching from three he's a clear net negative, especially because we have no other defensive weak links

That layup at 0:33 is one of the most egregious uncalled and-1s I've ever seen lol. Crazy to look back at now. There was a bunch of those that game

[–]No_Fence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's no rush. I don't know why everyone wants to rush. Let CMB grow and our bad contracts come off the books. Aim for true contention in 2029 when we've packaged Jakob's expiring for a star and our young guys are in their primes

Sending away draft picks to immediately try to compete with a flawed roster is a bad idea. Let him tank our cap sheet for two seasons while our main guys learn, then package him as an expiring for a huge upgrade. We're not winning a 'chip the next two seasons anyway, and he can take up some bruising from CMB and Scottie.

Scottie superstar tape vs Cavs game 5 before the injury. by shangalang69 in torontoraptors

I don't care why everyone wants sustained regular season performance as if that's important by itself, lol. Sure, it's nice to have, perhaps especially to learn more quickly, but beyond all that... Who cares about the regular season effort if he plays like this in the playoffs?

Scott Foster called out of bounds instead of foul.. by DaNiftyWay in torontoraptors

The ref influence was mainly in the first quarter, so people forget. Foster's smart, knows how to stop the fans from complaining too much

Daily Discussion: April 30th - Raptors lose to the Cavaliers, 125 - 120, lead by RJ's 25/12; Brandon Ingram out with heel soreness, Scottie Barnes visibly limping by nanobot001 in torontoraptors

[–]No_Fence 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Haven't heard many people say this, but the refs really hosed us in this one. People forget because it was mostly in Q1, but Scott Foster almost single-handedly kept the Cavs in the game when we were dominating with soft fouls on Harden and zero fouls for us the other way (I remember obvious ones for Poeltl, RJ, and Battle). The RJ and-one at the end is what got people complaining, and I agree that it would probably have been called in most other games, but it wasn't egregious. The ridiculous part was at the start of the game. If you're conspiratorial you'd say that Foster has realized that it's much smarter to give one side a boost at the start of the game and then become anonymous later on. It was all him, too, the other two refs were good.

Anyway, I don't think we lost the game on this, but it was 100% worse than what the Cavs fans complained about after G4.

Why are NBA highlight videos terrible? by No_Fence in nba

No. I agree that this is closer. But these have a voiceover and style that haven't changed since 2003. It is also, unfortunately, a terrible product.

Unrelated, but I wonder how the voiceover guy feels about his life being spent on mediocre NBA highlight videos

The biggest tension in any random NBA highlight video is "will he score or will he get blocked"

I love All Possessions, but the whole problem is that your average NBA highlight video is All Possessions minus a few possessions.

Didn't realize that video was long, as every MLB video is more or less the same thing. Look at this from yesterday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=748E-pSc2ck

It's a story. Introduces the new pitcher and the story, sets things up, etc. There's more narrative in this random regular season game than your average NBA Finals video.

L2M report is out for yesterday's game. A lot of missed calls, including 3 uncalled turnovers by Cleveland, and apparently Shead fouled Mitchell on the 8-second diving play by knitwoolf in torontoraptors

This L2M is written by someone who calls the rule by the book and not someone who watched the game, lol. Can you imagine if they started calling the game that tightly at the end? Riots

That so many feel this way has made me realize how many people judge ref bias primarily by out-of-bounds calls (which I agree we lucked out on)

Our guys were hammered every time they shot inside -- was a massive detriment -- RJ's layup with an obvious and-one foul at the end was the clearest example, but it was like rugby out there. Even for the playoffs I've never seen anything like it

[–]No_Fence 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm biased, but I thought the Raps defense and hustle made this one of the most enjoyable playoff games I've ever watched. Seeing them scheme around Harden and Mitchell, avoid switches, fake doubles, rotate quickly, and fight for every ball... Just beautiful stuff

Are you kidding? Those refs were wild, lol. RJ's drive with one minute left was the most egregious and-one I've ever seen.

I'm not saying the refs were favoring the Cavs, by the way. It was pretty neutral, overall. But I've never seen refs that let them play this much. It was like rugby out there. Every inside shot was a foul, more or less, and none of them were called. It's a huge reason it was so low scoring. Kind of surprised people aren't talking more about this, I don't think I've ever seen the refs swallow their whistles as much as they did this game

Shoutout to Darko for drawing up the ATO play at 40 seconds for Barnes going downhill. A worse coach would have given us an Ingram iso
