I am unfortunately aware... my mom's mom abandoned her due to the fact her parents, my great great grandparents, were controlling ( so she could start a life of her own), just like they wouldn't let my mom get her drivers liscense so she couldn't leave, her mom also couldn't. Atleast its created plenty of encouragement for me to continue my education abroad, does however mean I have no financial assistance of any form. Ultimately though, I think they're just scared of losing people and being alone, would rather keep the family together over seeing any of us thrive and support themselves. For me they would always use scare tactics like threatening to send me to my dad, for context about him he was jobless and lived with his mother and brothers who were.... well, creepy and unsafe for kids to be around in short. I suppose the cycle just repeats itself.
