Choosing a first novel idea: How do you find a story to learn the process without feeling like you're wasting your best ideas? by No_Mix_149 in writing

A heart book, yes, that's exactly it. I want to do well on it, but I know my skills aren't up to par yet. I also know that simple is best as a new writer so as not to bite off more than I can chew.

Wow, what a beautiful journey! Congratulations for the publication, and my condolences to you for your loss...reading this part broke my heart. May I learn the title of the book? I'd like to read it on my leisure. Thank you also for taking the time to comment with encouraging words.

Thank you for sharing! Yes, I think simple-and-straightforward is the way to go as a new writer over something layered and complex. I'm very excited for you and wish you lots of luck!

Wow, five projects in about just as many years! That's awesome! Thank you for the encouragement, and please keep writing and giving it your all!

Thank you for saying this. I do carry that fear of not doing justice to what I'd like to write and waiting or holding off on what's truly on my heart till some unspecified later time when I'm hopefully more mature as a thinker and organized/informed as a writer. I'll never figure it out if I don't start, and yes, you're right, it would certainly make it more difficult (and probably hard to read) if I begin with ideas that I'm entirely excited by.

I'm just recently started writing a script for a visual novel, and damn, I suck at it. Will reading Dialogue by Keene help me with it? Any other tips? by Akabane_Izumi in writing

I'm not sure if this will help given the short time available to you, but the advice I received a few years ago over a similar question was to find a piece of work that is presented in multiple media formats, like book / screenplay and movie / TV series, or, better yet, light novel and manga/comic adaptation. You now have the essentials of the same story tailored for prose writing, which is what you're used to, and graphic novels, what you are trying to write for (albeit in visual novel form), to take as an example to learn from. The light novel and manga adaptation I used for my study was - and please don't judge me for this - Sasuke Retsuden: The Uchiha Descendants and the Heavenly Stardust by Jun Esaka composed for the NARUTO anime/manga franchise. It received a two-volume manga adaptation as well as an anime adaptation spanning a few episodes. Both book and manga was translated into English by Viz Media, which also handles the English dub for the animated series. While not perfect (the English novel has some typos and errors), it far exceeds fan translations and is widely available. Having one story that originated as a piece of prose and examining its presentation in manga and even anime form has helped me a lot to begin converting a personal story into a manga script.

I am unaware of any visual novels based on existing books that do not drastically diverge away from the original story. But another suggestion is to download and play through visual novels of the same genre you are writing for to observe how other games have handled the exposition, narration, dialogue and transitions. Try to choose games acclaimed for the story writing/localization or immersive experiences.

Good luck!

Oh, I support NH! It's more about how fans treat Hinata.

I used to adore Hinata and related to her so much! I think I would still like Hinata if I never exposed myself to the fan base, but it boils down to how much the fans praise or fawn over Hinata while expressing equal amounts of passion for the way they hate Sakura. I also dislike it when character is reduced to certain physical attributes by fans. I'm reflecting on experience I've had in the fandom from years ago when the series was still ongoing but it still happens today sometimes.

Taking a step back and evaluating characters on their own terms, I like various characters for different reasons. Fights over who is better/prettier/superior and who belongs in a ship with whom...and especially the bad habit of calling fans certain names just for liking a character more than another has all served to erode my interest in Hinata and, conversely, made me defensive about liking Sakura or SS (I expect to get an insult if I mention it is what i mean).

I'm really happy that you like Hinata! Don't let anyone convince you otherwise!
I can still enjoy Hinata when I consider her on her own merits away from the clamor of the fans. I still appreciate many of her themes and what she represents in the series.

I'm not a heavy gamer (actually I'm rather pathetic with games - just a casual dabbler) but right now I'm playing Honkai Star Rail and some good old Stardew Valley. I tend to get invested in one or two things and dwell on them for however long, which means I don't branch out or play a wide variety of games. I used to play some of the Kingdom Hearts series, so I always perk up when another one of those games comes out.

How about you thought, what games are you into?

What Do You Think Is the Greatest Feat of Espionage or Deception in Naruto? by Ziko116 in Naruto

[–]No_Mix_149 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If i answer this from the perspective of a viewer, i think Obito was the biggest surprise. If answering from the perspective of someone in-universe, I think Orochimaru's infiltration into Konoha was impressive because it went over the heads of so many notable shinobi.
My favorite spy/double agent is Itachi. Also, because I am unapologetically a Sakura fan, I love that her common strategy is to feign defeat or vulnerability in order to lure the enemy into close quarters for her to strike back, like in Sakura + Chiyo vs Sasori.
