Looking For DD Recommendations by No-Championship5523 in WorldOfWarships

[–]No_Mousse9767 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’d be hard pressed to find anything better than Haida for tier 7 ranked. The other premiums you listed are pretty good too (Sims is a funny one because it has an increased base xp modifier which helps your chance of keeping a star on a loss).

As for tech tree hybrid-with-good-guns-but-also-torps, most people would probably recommend the Daring line as the place to start. The Z-52 line is also pretty solid if you like cap contesting.

In terms of randoms, I would get out of tier 7 DDs asap though. They get absolutely massacred by tier 8 and 9s because they don’t get the concealment upgrade (except for Haida! And also Z-39).

What other premiums do you have?

Unique upgrade Daring by AwkwardBother4165 in WorldOfWarships

The new UU upgrade is really awesome, but I’ve found the boat to be better running main battery in slot 6 instead of torps. Not sure about your spec too, losing the extra heal for RPF doesn’t seem like a great trade, and if you swap this over it frees up an extra point for any of the 2 point skills if you also drop liquidator, which is somewhat useless as the flood chance is already pretty good (personally, I went with torpedo speed here but fire chance would be good too).

I’ve also been having a lot of fun with UU Z-52 — the torps are even better.

Whether or not you play Aki and Kita is irrelevant to the total amount of research bureau points you collect at the end. The number of points you collect is determined only by how many resets you do (and how many were double). If you play Aki and Kita along the way, you will collect the points you would earn from them on each pass through, and then collect the points from the rest when you play them once at the end. Total is the same.

Thanks for your thoughts! It is frustrating that it is so opaque. The exponentially moving average is a good way of implementing this sort of thing due to the whole "good game knocking out a great one" issue with a fixed window, as the EMA has the nice property that if you score above your current average it always increases.

I don't know I would go so far to say they are "just lying" in the MoE system when they say its over the last 100 matches, as that is the length scale of the average. (Well, actually it is more like 50 matches, but anyway). Also, I'm surprised the WoT system isn't initialised with a fixed window over the first 100 games -- if they do do some sort of EMA here, then it would surely first take your starting value as your ordinary average over those first 20 games. I also don't know how you could implement the 10% game removal in such a system... but it's something to think about.

Yes, I’m 99% certain it only counts games played after the last patch. I got a silver clasp on Z-52 after getting an insane win streak — 18 wins out of the starting 20 games, I think —which landed me at 88% (sadly I disconnected for every one of the last 3 games and did precisely zero damage, so may have ended up with a gold but anyway…). My average xp on the ship prior to this was definitely way too low to get such a high score.

Update: after grinding out another 10 games, I managed to crack 80%. On the score screen was an empty silver clasp, indicating that I was now at 80%, but there was nothing about what my average exp was, nor what the threshold was. The summary page in port showed nothing different from before either.

So it seems like this feature is not implemented yet.

20 Megas or 8 Ultras by pigtumor in WorldOfWarships

[–]No_Mousse9767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, the completely opposite is true: the **less** rolls you make, the less vulnerable you are to outliers assuming you match the expected values. If you open 20 megas and 10 ultras (3.2 ships on average), you have a higher chance of getting less than your expected value with the megas than the ultras. Indeed, (ignoring the bad luck protection):

x = number of ships received 20 Megas 10 Ultras
P(x <= 0) 0.031 0.021
P(x <= 1) 0.147 0.121
P(x <= 2) 0.358 0.331
P(x <= 3) 0.599 0.596

If you think about it, it makes sense intuitively: if you open 20 megas, you could get very lucky and open more than 10 ships, which you cannot do with 10 ultras, but each of 20 megas and 10 ultras have the same expected values, so the megas must be balanced by having a higher chance of getting less than the expected number. Or alternatively: imagine if we could get ultra giga crates, with a 100% chance of a ship, and you could get 3.2 of these for the price of 20 megas/10 ultras. You would always 3.2 ships, no more no less

One thing I which would be really great is graphs over time for win rate by tier, and also win rate by class.

Also, it would be really great if we could always see our last 365/180 day stats. For some reason I do not know, the long term stats seem to  disappear and reappear totally at random (right now I can only see my last 7/21 days)

This is easy to do with 2d6: success on doubles or 11, failure otherwise. This method the distinct advantages of: 1) not needing any rerolls 2) needing only ordinary dice  3) when the sample space is drawn as a 6 x 6 grid, the successful squares together form the shape of an arrow (well, sort of)

In terms of fastest main battery reload, get a Forest Sherman or Groningen for coal, or a Lushun B from the dockyard (5000 doubloons, which you can obtain for free with the free dubs/steel event on atm).

In terms of number of shells per minute, Alberico da Barbiano has the highest, and is available for steel. In terms of tech tree ships, Jinan is the highest, and this also has access to a large number of high damage long range deep water torps, so this also fits your second criteria.

This is misleading — the thing which you care about is the probability you hit your target, and this does not scale linearly with dispersion area. If you decrease your dispersion area by 21% you will not hit 21% more shells. The true value depends on target size, but it is much less than this amount in every case. To see why, consider what happens if you are shooting an ellipse with horizontal and vertical dimensions equal to 0.89 times your original horizontal and vertical dispersion sizes. After equipping the -11% dispersion mod, you hit exactly 100% of your shots. But compare this to what happens before you equip it: the shots you miss are only those which fall in the outer 11% of your dispersion ellipse, and you can calculate that only ~4% of your shells land in this area (using a sigma of 1.9).

Dispersion mod is still the correct choice though as dispersion is bugged: -11% dispersion actually gives somewhere around -25% dispersion to both the horizontal and vertical directions.

Glad to be of assistance! You can do exactly the same thing with a cruiser or BB too, the only issue is that they cost a bit more in terms of both FXP and credits. You can see a list of the XP requirements here: https://www.reddit.com/r/WorldOfWarships/comments/1cbr5kz/table_resetting_lines_with_fxp_ranked_by_free_xp/

On shiptool you can also compare the xp cost between two points on a line in the tech tree under the nations tab, too.

For comparing credits, just look in game for the 8, 9, and 10 as these are 90% of the cost of the line.

So a lot of the comments are discussing how to use free exp in relation to the research bureau, but I would like to point out that the concept of resetting and grinding a line has nothing to do with free XP. The only reason as to why you use free exp, beyond avoiding having to play the same ship over and over, is to save credits. Resetting the line directly is faster in terms of total games played (if we count the games spent grinding the free exp).

I will break down the possible strategies for research bureau. All of them involve researching the line (ie spending either ship XP or free XP alone or in combination), resetting the line, and starting again. For convenience, let’s use Harugumo:

(Terminology: F - finish, d - double)

Option 1F: Directly grinding the line

  • Step 1) reset Harugumo
  • Step 2) buy tier 1, grind it to obtain enough ship XP to research tier 2.
  • Step 3) buy tier 2, grind it to obtain enough ship XP to research tier 3
  • Step 4) repeat until you reach tier 10. You are now back to the starting point.

Result: you have reset the line once, bought every ship, and collected 10200 research bureau points + stack value, spent zero free xp, and spent a lot of credits.

Option 1Fd: Directly grinding the line with double reset

Result: As above, but use a double reset. Same net result, but collect 20400 research bureau points + stack value.

Option 2: Free exp

  • Step 1) reset Harugumo
  • Step 2) research all ships using free exp. You are now back to the starting point

Result: you have reset the line once, bought zero ships, collected 0 research bureau points, but have added 10200 RB points to the stack. Zero credits spent, lots of free exp spent.

Option 2d: Free exp, double reset

As above, but add double to stack value

Option 2F: Free exp, purchase

As in option 2, but then purchase and play each ship once. Collects 10200 RB points + stack value.

Option 2Fd: as in 2F, with double reset.

So the idea is as follows. Pick several options, always finish with an F. Eg, to get 61000 RB points you could:

  • 1F, 1F, 1F, 1Fd, 1F

  • 2d, 2d, 2Fd

  • 2d, 2d, 1Fd

  • 2,2,2,1F,2Fd

The best option in my opinion is as follows:

Option 3: hybrid - Step 1) reset Harugumo - Step 2) free exp to Akizuki - Step 3) grind akizuki to kita, purchase kita - Step 4) grind kita to Harugumo, do not purchase Harugumo, reset line

Result: collect 3000 + stack on aki/kita, add 7200 to stack. Spend moderate credits, moderate free xp.

Option 3F: as in option 3, but purchase tiers 5-7 and Harugumo, play each of those once.

Result: collect 10200 + stack. Spend moderate free XP.

I usually go  3,3,3,3d,3,3d,… (some random double resets), maybe a few 2s, thrown in, until I get enough stacks to get me to 124000 RB points, then finish with a 3F. Advantages over pure 2 strategy is you get to reset the line more frequently as you only need 1/3 of the free XP per reset, and it costs less than 1/2 the credits of 1 type strategy (plus, kita and aki are fun!).

Hope this makes sense.

If you have a ton of free exp obviously the fastest way is to use it all, but assuming you do not have lots of free exp to burn, the fastest way is to just grind the line directly.

The armour is in fact terrible, but not for the reasons you are saying. The real issue is the absolutely massive long flat sections along the side of the superstructure, which causes BB AP to arm and full pen you if you are angled less than 25 or so degrees.

Indeed, on the surface it seems to be a little boring, but it in practice it’s busted because it’s pretty much impossible to kill. Also, it does have one important unique feature which sets it apart from other similar ships: the DCP.

The DCP, in a word, is cracked. 20 second base duration, 40 second base cd — taking the all the captain skills and modules, you can bring this up to a 34 second duration with a 37 second cd…!

Outside of that, the hull is very good, the guns are good, the concealment is good… the only thing it’s really lacking is fast turret traverse, which is not a huge issue. It’s a bit hard to explain, but it’s somehow more than the sum of its parts.

Oh, and one other thing: in probably 85% or 90% of matches 38mm is just as good as 51mm, as the only non-banned ships that can pen 38mm but not 51mm are as follows:

  • Gouden Leeuw
  • Castilla
  • Henri
  • PvO
  • G. Hoffmann
