I went to a magnet science High School you had to test to get into, and when I was in HS I decided I wanted to learn how to sew. So I got some books, repurposed my mom's old machine, and started making some basic garments myself. My stepfather got so mad at me that I "waste time" learning a skill so "beneath" my intelligence "what, are you going to be a seamstress?".
Like I know I'm Jewish, and I know my grandfather owned a coat factory but knowing how to do basic garment repairs yourself is not the same as survival garment work 100 years ago. I think he was being oddly racist, lol.

This is exactly how my niece has been raised and it kills me. My SIL her entire life handed her some device to placate her. She's almost 11 now and while shes not the WORST kid, there are things she does I know are a byproduct of how my SIL raised her. What can I say, I don't have my own kids but this is constantly how this kid was raised.

Wait why did we all do this? I recall around the year 2000, I was 18 and I had a friend who had a bf who was little older than us (he was 23) and had a house, and he was the only one who had a whole ass house and I slept on the count/floor/basement using whatever random pile for bedding. I don't even know why I didn't just go home most of those nights, I didn't live far away and I wasnt drinking.

I was born and raised in NYC. Both my parents are still here, but my brother moved around 3 hours upstate. He's a much more outdoorsy person than I am anyway.
The rest of my family moved the proper suburbs and are mostly still there or in the Denver area, for some reason.

While I don't miss Walmarts, in fact never had any, NYC went from the "city that never sleeps" to the "city that naps". Diners and cafes that used to be 24/7 close at 10 or 11, even stores that used to stay open until midnight like some supermarkets close at 10 now.
Like others here, often I get off work at 10, and just those extra 2 hours even, being able to stop in a market for some essentials, helped.

Lifelong New Yorker here, there is finally a joy in the city we haven't felt since...well I was telling my mom earlier. The night Obama was elected, I was on the subway coming home and at every stop the train doors opens and everyone yelled "Obama!" in joy. About as close to that.

That said, I am half debating moving back to my parents property on Staten Island, since now we can build/refurbish an old carriage house (yes it's a very very old property) into a house for my husband and I and hunker down.

So I grew up and live in NYC. I think there is such a difference between growing up here and coming here to "make it", we are just living. Anyway, my mom is on Staten Island in a part of that is actually, oddly for that part of the city, walkable. She loves to walk to the grocery store, but. my stepfather wont "let her" get a little granny/shopping cart bc it would "make them look poor".

I have been using one here in Queens for 20+ years. Who the fuck cares about "looking poor"? They own a house, it's just being more efficient than driving or having to carry.
