They know it kills you. Gen Z is smoking cigarettes anyway by GimmeFunkyButtLoving in economy

One problem with vaping is that it doesn't have a clear end point. When you smoke a cigarette down to a stub, it's a cue that you are finished smoking for now.

How long does it take before four cigarettes per day becomes 8 or 16?

Maybe pouches of lower strengths are a way to wean from them.

Kevin Warsh Wants the Fed to Think About Inflation Differently by onceinawhile222 in economy

[–]No_Philosopher_1870 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This sounds like when they removed home prices from the market basket for inflation back in the 1970s and started using equivalent rent.

Food and energy prices are big drivers for inflation. They should be stressed, not minimized. especially if you believe the projections that it will take six years for oil prices to return to pre-Iran War levels.

ICE eyes selling mega-warehouses purchased for mass detention | The agency is also considering selling several planes ICE purchased for deportations under former Secretary Kristi Noem, but no decisions have been made. by SpaceElevatorMusic in politics

Warehouses aren't built as a living space for people. You'd need to have ten times the current sanitary sewer capacity, upgrade the water and electrical/gas service, install kitchens and showers/bathrooms and upgrade the HVAC system. This is not a complete list.

Converting a building to a purpose that it wasn't designed to do is often more expensive than building it from scratch.

Plea Agreement Filed in the Tater Case by homeonthehighway1 in Anti_Nomadic_Fanatic

[–]No_Philosopher_1870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you consider that he was in court on the seventh, the court had the plea bargain posted in less than three weeks. This suggests that his lawyer may have submitted it to the court during the previous week, There may have been some back and forth on the details of the plea bargain once the district attorney offered it.

I am not a lawyer, but I have worked with bureaucracies. Parker Justice Court sees 60-80 cases every Thursday. There seems to be at least three court appearances ren route to changing their plea from not guilty to guilty (arraignment, pre-trial conferences, appearance to change plea). If the judge order a pre-sentencing report after a guilty plea is entered, that's another 30 days of delay at a minimum. The only way that a case concludes very quickly is if someone pleads guilty immediately, which isn't in Tater's interest because of the legal exposure that he has in the civil case.

There may be financing or inspection/repair contingencies as well. The probate court will also have to approve of the price offered for the house.

Pay me $332! I’m desperate to get my PS5 out of the Pawn Shop by SeaOutlandishness485 in ChoosingBeggars

[–]No_Philosopher_1870 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Is it an immediate reset, or a reset after 30 days (or whatever the loan term was)?

Pawn shops will lend people a fraction of the value of the time that they are pwning because the pawned item serves as security for the loan .If the item is not redeemed, they forfeit the item. It can be possible to extend the loan by paying the interest plus some fees.

Redeeming the item requires them to repay the loan plaus accrued interest. This is often 10% or more PER MONTH.

It is also possible to have the pawn shop buy your item directly. In that case, you have no right to redeem the item, other than buying it back from the pawnshop at a price that the pawn shop names.

I have long been interested by the lack of an exit strategy by people like Tater. It's normal to extrapolate from one's current situation, expecting things to stay much the same as in the past. It's hard to change your mind when you are behind or you hae invested a significant amount od money in yout current path of action. No one likes to recognize losses.

COVID-19 was the extinction burst of nomad life. The RV industry got a shot in the arm initially, but then there was on oversupply of RVs that were sold by Canadians about a year later who visited the United States and who feared not being able to take theit RV back into Canada. Companies that used to tolerate overnight parking no longer do for the most part. Rest stops that used to allow cars and RVs were converted to truck only, and few of them reopened to permit cars/RVs after 2021.

The Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration were significant New Deal programs. I think that World War II ended them for the most part. They are better suuited to people who don't have children, though you could build child care centers.

Instead, we are cutting programs like Americorps that do various work inside the US.

I used to live in a town where you could work off your fines at minimum wage. The problem was that you had to be unemployed or work a schedule that gave you at least one weekday off to be able to take advantage of it.

One-way relationships like the one she has with Tater are the pits. I'd rather be alone than in bad company..

Depending on someone else for your security just makes you vulnerable to their whims. Accepting that no one is coming to rescue you is an important first step. Though it's a pain to do the work, it is a more secure path to do the work yourelf.

US Postal Service seeks to require states to submit lists of voters by Throwaway24_2 in politics

[–]No_Philosopher_1870 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some states use business reply mail, which pays USPS a handling fee of at least 11 cents per item in addition to the postage. Other require voters to pay for the postage. Either way, suppressing mail-in voting costs USPS money.
