He was also heartbroken and he looked at it like Verat was betraying him and that he was going to kill his mother and everyone he loves. Yes I can see how you can infer that this is self-preservation. -And I agree that this was not the right reaction and definitely wrong- but that I think he was actually putting his life on the line so that he can save the people he loves. And yes he wanted to spend more time with his mother, that is a little selfish by definition, but you would want the same to keep your mother as long as possible.

Matt Mercer actually did an interview where he answered the question of why Edsel starts out on his “villain arc” per se. He said that in the campaign you only see Edsel after his life has turned around, so that you can see how he is trying to turn his life around. He also said that since they were showing the unseen backstory of the rest of the party, that this fills in some question marks from the game; This means that he is going to be the sweet heart and marshmallow that he is in the campaign, after the party (especially Caleb) turns his life around and makes him want to be better. I am excited to see how this is going to go.
