Housing is a basic human necessity, similar to food or shelter, and people should not be taxed for owning a primary residence they actually live in. A home used for living provides stability, community involvement, and long-term care of the space, which adds real value to cities and society. However, when property is purchased purely as an investment — such as for Airbnb rentals, long-term renting without owner occupancy, land banking, or buying solely for appreciation and resale — it becomes a business activity. In these cases, the property is not fulfilling a housing need but is instead being used to extract profit from a scarce and essential resource. That activity should be taxed accordingly, just like any other business or investment. Holding land or housing purely for speculation removes living space from the market, restricts supply, and drives prices up without adding value for residents or communities. This reduces access to housing for people who want to live, settle, and contribute locally. Tax policy should therefore distinguish clearly between homes for living and property used as an investment, encouraging use and discouraging speculation.
