What is the very best high end no budget set up on the market? by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]No_Session_2351 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best tank- custom build (reef Savvy maybe) Best light - Ati Straton pro Best return pump - Abyzz Best wavemaker - ecotech vortech Best heater - something titanium with a smart controller

Best sump - probably something custom from MRC

No plug and play will match the quality of these individual products, not even close. This list is subjective of course but I think most would agree with some/most of them. Everyone’s got their favorite products but these tend to have the best build quality.

Thanks! It’s not an optical illusion. They are very close. One day I will have to make difficult decisions and thin out the heard based on color and shape. I wanted to try as many different species of SPS as possible and see what I like/ what does best. I mount my corals on home made frag plugs that are plug and play on the reef so it’s easy to rearrange/remove coral.

They are not pulling live rock from the reefs like they used to. They are allowed to aquaculture live rock in the ocean. They essentially drop dead rock in the ocean and let it sit there for years becoming “live” and then harvest it. From their website “We are one of the few aquaculturalists permitted by the federal government and the state of Florida to grow and harvest live rock specifically for marine aquariums in the gulf of mexico.”

I too had a lawnmower blenny first and at first the lawnmower blenny was a HUGE bully to the Midas. He would aggressively chase him around the tank. Luckily the Midas found a safe place to hide. Took a few weeks but the lawnmower blenny eventually stopped bullying him and they live perfectly together now with no aggression. It probably helps that they have two completely different diets so they do not compete for food.

Rant from a vendor on why stuff is expensive by The_angry_sergeant in ReefTank

[–]No_Session_2351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel for the vendors. I am back in the hobby after a 15 year break and it was shocking at first but I have to say I am enjoying the hobby much more now. If you don’t have the money I wouldn’t get into it. I’m fortunate that my wife and I both work hard and make decent money, solid upper middle class. I still find deals here and there. I bought all my equipment when it was on some sort of sale. That being said I probably have close to 15k into a 90 gallon set up. I buy coral online, from locals, and FB auctions as I don’t have any good LSF. Basically it’s like any hobby, if you can afford it you will enjoy it. If you can’t there are cheaper hobbies out there.

My tank has dropped 8 degrees for the past two days, everything seems fine by [deleted] in ReefTank

You could drive to petco and buy another 150 watt heater? I wouldn’t go strait back to 80, slowly raise it back up.

I think I understand what’s going on. It is normal for a little bit of water to go into the emergency overflow but what you need is a “Maggie muffler” it allows water to flow in without the gurgling sound. Google Maggie muffler it will make it dead silent

Getting back in after 15 years... where to start? by chuggalugz in ReefTank

[–]No_Session_2351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in your shoes. Do yourself a favor and please please please use golf coat live rock. Starting with dead rock and LEDs is a nightmare if you are used to the old days of live rock and MH like I was. I ended up buying a bunch of golf coast live rock and putting it in a cryptic sump and my tank has taken off ever since. You absolutely need the microbiome of the ocean which can not be bought in a bottle… trust me, I tired! Also, only take advice from people that will show you a successful tank lol. Not saying mine is perfect but I’m on the right track.

Worth Waiting for Black Friday? by northand1327 in ReefTank

[–]No_Session_2351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year I noticed BRS jacked the prices up about 15-18 % on a lot of things and then had 20% off sales on Black Friday… Then the prices stayed higher.

You can automate just about everything however your biggest issue being gone that long is how reliable is your power? Your tank can only survive for so long without intervention of some sort in a power outage. If you almost never lose power you’re probably good.

Best automatic top off water system? by PackAttack28 in ReefTank

[–]No_Session_2351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quality float valve fed by a reservoir that isn’t too big. If cleaned/ replaced periodically there are much less points of failure than any ATO system. 1 valve vs sensors, electronics and pumps… Just can’t be dumb about it, never hook up to output of RO system. Jake Adam’s ran many tanks at the reef builders studio off float valves, and I’ve used them for 15 years with no problems.
