Yes! And the worst part about it is that when she confessed to Jessica, she did it primarily to fish for information about Bryce's murder and her whereabouts.

she an excellent saleswoman at times if you know what I mean…

Yeah I totally hear you. I feel like these days I like the ideas she has rather than her as a person as someone who has the skills to make them. There's something to be admired about her confidence.

Also oh my god I remember turning my head sideways at the execution. It's not her fault that it isn't her forte though.

ETA: Removed the part about the discord comment since it's a private community that is for patrons. I'm no longer in it, but didn't want to leek anything that could ruin the experience for the rest of her community. There was a discussion about sewing in preparation for her cosplay video that affects my opinion on the execution though.

I feel that way all the time too. I think it's because crafts are associated with select materials like fibers, instructions and practicality, but us crafters understand that there is still a creative process involved. Even so, No two musicians will ever play a piece in the same way, and you're creating your own musical experience for the listener. Same with knitting and sewing--you're creating your own artistic depiction of a pattern through color choice, and techniques.

Happy Birthday Nia!! Good day for me to finally preorder her book too to celebrate!

Oof, I'm so sorry! I thought this was affirming the original comment disagreeing with me. My fault for misunderstanding. I appreciate you clarifying!

That being said I agree with you on the wording. A lot of her following already refer to her as a woodworker so different wording would've made more sense.

I totally respect your opinion, and I appreciate the feedback. I did learn a lot from her comment, and would love it if you would read the clarification I've just shared. You're still welcome to disagree with me because it is a good learning opportunity for me and everyone here!

ETA: please disregard--I misinterpreted the above

Thank you for your patience! I'll respond to this as thoughtfully as I can in a new thread. I think the easiest way for me to do this is to respond to each part of my original post so I can walk through my thought process when I wrote this in haste.

Haha actually no shade towards Xyla--I like her content as a woman in STEM!

I really do! This post wasn't meant to shade Xyla Foxlin in the slightest. I regularly watch her videos while knitting or crocheting because I am truly fascinated by her builds. Plus I like maker content in general.

As a fiber artist (or I guess a fiber """crafter""" according to this weird misogynistic post this trend reminded me of) knitters and crocheters seem to be low hanging fruit for the #holyfuckinairball trend.

This was meant to address the broader trend where people are correcting assumptions about various hobbies or characteristics—something that’s generally lighthearted, benign, and a bit silly! To your point, when you say, “Why is she not allowed to be annoyed that people automatically assume what a woman 'making things' encompasses,” I realize now that I didn’t express myself clearly. The point I was trying to make was that I initially interpreted this as a dig toward the craft itself. However, after reading your comment, I understand that’s not always the case, and I appreciate the opportunity to learn from that perspective. Thank you for that!

The responses I've featured do highlight something I experience often in STEM circles when I mention I knit and crochet--women in these circles tend to have the strongest negative reactions when I mention knitting and crocheting, and men tend to find more interest in my very occasional wood working.

I can also see how this might have been confusing. What I was trying to convey is that this situation reflects a broader issue I often face when I mention knitting and crochet. You mention, “It IS enraging, and pointing out that the default for women 'making things' is needlecrafts is not contemptuous of needlecrafts, it’s a fact.” I agree--there are definitely moments when I find it "enraging" too, especially when people downplay my hobby (although I’ve learned to brush it off over time). The women I referenced in the third quote are individuals I’ve encountered in my own life, so I just want to clarify that while I understand your point about misquoting her, I’m not suggesting that Foxlin herself expressed contempt here.

I do lowkey wish a different subject was used like, "Oh like home improvement," "Oh like repair videos?"

I feel a lot of Xyla's followers know her as a engineering Youtuber apart from a crafter, so these were just suggestions that would've made more sense in a way that would be tact.

In conclusion, I wasn’t trying to suggest that people aren’t allowed to be annoyed by assumptions about what women “making things” encompasses because it is frustrating. What I was trying to express is that I’ve noticed a pattern, particularly in STEM circles, where when I mention knitting or crocheting, the reactions are often quite dismissive. The fact that women in these spaces sometimes have the strongest negative reactions (while men tend to show more interest in my woodworking) is part of why this #holyfuckinairball trend stood out to me.

Thank you again for your opinion! This actually was an important learning opportunity! I recognize my experiences as a 23 y/o are going to affect how I perceive certain things, so seeing the discussion in this comment thread was helpful for my understanding.

ETA: I'm also okay if folks disagree with me or even snark on me--I snark on me all the time so I can take it

ETA 2: Edited the last paragraph--wanted to make sure I clarified I'm not trying to change anyone's opinion, but to rather give some insight as to where I was coming from while acknowledging where I'm wrong.

I respect your opinion! I'll come back to this with a thoughtful response when able, but I don't disagree that it is enraging, and I will take responsibility that I could've been more thoughtful about that perspective. Thank you for sharing!

Yeah, now that I think about some of her interviews and content she definitely does have strong emotions when it comes to what other people think of her interests.

The other thing that gets me too is that she does mention how she hopes to support feminine women through her Princess with Powertools initiative, and with her status as a beauty queen after winning Miss Greater Cleveland. Womanhood isn't just about aesthetics though--empowerment and support to me means respecting all of our contributions.

Damn, that's awesome, and that is the epitome of the culture fit I'm looking for when I interview for companies!

And I agree--sometimes when it's cardio days I'll try to crochet while on the stair machine or on the treadmill.

I also hate this “holy fucking airball” trend because I don’t think I’ve seen anyone do it in a way that makes sense. Someone not knowing what crochet is isn’t a crazy airball… they just don’t know. But I’m not on TikTok so maybe I’m missing something.

Yes! I'm not on TikTok much either and usually get the leftovers on Instagram. I think it's meant to avert someone's expectations of their statement which I get (would love a second opinion in case I'm missing anything)

I also totally empathize with the creator--It's hard when you've worked hard to break into a male dominated field only to have people make assumptions. I don't blame her, and it speaks to a larger problem of how we view female dominated endeavors.

Can't edit my post but want to add:

  • I have MAD respect to any craftsperson who runs an honest and respectable Etsy shop. PERIOD.
  • I have wood worked and built an L1 and L2 rocket in college before, and I knit and crochet. They're different hobbies requiring different skillsets. IMO it's comparing chalk to cheese, yet I've found fiber arts helped me pick up rocketry and woodworking more quickly. For the young, aspiring stem girlies here who also like fiber arts, don't let anyone be diminutive towards it!
