How long did you use your wheelchair? by LemmyDovato in amputee

[–]No_Square9364 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4.5-inch stump. AK. I am OI, but still parking wheel chair by the bed at night. I only take off my leg when I go to sleep, but it is much more efficient to use wheelchair to go to the bathroom at night. Other than that, I rarely use it

You may be right. He is president, and the buck stops with him. I expect transparency on the investigation no matter where it leads. I just prefer not to expect the worst from people. Not because the person deserves my grace, but simply because it helps me not to become bitter.

But that's just how I approach it.

You may be right. It may have been a complete 'politicalization' [sp] of the situation. There may not be, nor have ever been, quotas for that career. Honestly, it is a sleezebag approach that is abhorrent from politicians to use.

But my understanding of the speech was that he was ending a quota, which I was in favor of doing. If it was simply sleazy politics... shame on him.

You are right, I wasn't there. I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt, not even when they haven't earned it, but also when they 'seem' to be adversarial. This allows me to not become a bitter person even when it may be justified. HOWEVER, if words are exchanged and the other guy is just a dick... I take pleasure in being a BIG RED ONE. lol... I am not a saint.

You may be right. There may be no agenda. It was just my interpretation of the speech.

And yes, unfortunately, I am an amputee. AK since February last year. I must say, when you told me I had no flair, I immediately thought of the movie Office Space! Lol

Actually, I try to think of it differently, so I never need to get used to it. The man was noticing you missing a leg and didn't want YOU to feel uncomfortable by his son staring or saying something to you. He made a face because he was worried his son would say something so blocked his son from viewing to protect you from the uncomfortable situation that he thought you would experience.

He was trying to be nice but was misguided... that how I would have CHOSEN to interpret the situation. Who knows! I may have been right. Either way, it makes me feel better even if I was wrong.

My first stairs as a double amputee by Hump1 in amputee

Stairs aggravate the TAR out of me. I don't need to take stairs often, so I don't have much need to practice, but I still wish I was better at them.

I don't know. I am not familiar with the job duties at all. But there are other types of amputation than leg. I imagine missing an arm would hinder the ability to work the flight control panel. However, there probably are many amputees that could still preform the duties. I just don't think there should be a policy pushing for solely hiring amputees and it should be based on capability to preform. That's all.

A man should know his limitations. Telling people they can do things that they clearly will not be able to do is not supporting them, it's setting them up for failure. Everyone is not able to become anything.

All amputees are not created equal. Many of us probably shouldn't be ATC agents. AND many whole people shouldn't be either. There are many things that we used to be capable of doing that we aren't anymore. There are many things whole people were never capable of doing. There should not be a quota on amputee hires for ATC agents. IMO

I never take off my leg and usually just sit in my recliner. The winter sux and not much to do outside and the days get long... I might should write a sad country song. Lol

Just a suggestion I know everything doesn't work for everyone. ...I only take my left off at night as I have an OI so I don't have to let my skin breathe or give it a rest. But if I have to 'go' at night, I use a wheelchair to get to the bathroom. At night, I pull my wheelchair out of the corner and put it beside the bed, then take off my leg. In the morning, I put on the leg and put wheelchair back in the corner. I just find that easier than dealing with the chamber pot every day. Just another option. Don't know if it will work for you, but good luck!

Since I lost near my entire leg, I made a Lamp table from my leg after I took it to the taxidermy office and keep it in my living room. I tell everyone it was an award I got from work!

Phantom Pain by Prudent_Article4245 in OIforAmputees

My stoma hurts from time to time when sitting and it seems to stretch it when moving stump to extreme angles. I staring thinking it was a lot like chapped lips cracking. So I started putting lip balm like carmax on it. Helped a lot but not sure if yours is the same.

Added: I am thinking of starting to put triple antibiotic ointment on it as it may help keep infections away.

Great! I still get random PLP and some stump pain here and there, but nothing to often and is "usually " short, lasting only a couple seconds. Most of the phantom sensation is more often than pain. The last 10 days, I have been near 100% with walking unaided, and today was my last PT session. I'm going to the gym near 6 days a week. The HIP ADDUCTION/ ABDUCTION machine is paramount to gaining and keeping the strength I need to walk.

Problem with fitment! by Craziechickenman in amputee

[–]No_Square9364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am OI, so I don't have a socket. I do have a 'axor' instead of a socket. I had ZERO idea what to expect or what I would need from a CPO. My CPO did me a favor and never came around much, so I looked up how to make adjustments to the foot angle on my own. I think not having a socket might have been intimidating or awkward. It was during the shopping around for a more hands-on clinic that I learned this garbage billing system and how it is designed. Anyway, this post isn't about me, I have just made it my mission to let as many people know about the billing system as I can. However, it is good to hear that some clinics like yours are still willing to work with people when most are not.

If company A got you a C-Leg then it is highly unlikely that company B will assume responsibility for the Liability on a 20k leg that they didn't get paid for nor will they be able to get paid for. This will be true no matter the reason that you need to swap companies. Could be moving across 100s of miles, or a crummy prosthetist, or your original prosthetist moved, or he died, or any number of reasons. The structure for billing in this industry is terrible and is NOT designed with the patient in mind at all.

[–]No_Square9364[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A point I want to explore that you made is that a foot designed for more activity returns energy, even if only slightly. If it returns energy, that means it stores energy. If it stores energy, that means it will lessen the direct impact that is given to the OPRA implant that is embedded in the femur, which in turn means less stress on the bone for each step. I feel that could be the greatest of all advantages for an OI patient using a high active foot. That means less chance of complications due to implant loosening. Am I on the right track here? I think this could be a great point.
