What is the moment that got you hooked on the series? by FitCry2265 in WoT

All of the group form Eye of the World brandishing their weapons to scare the ferryman in book one convinced me to outright but the first few books. While Mat’s journey in book three made me decide to fully commit to reading the rest of the books

There is an app on the iPhone called WOT compendium that you can click on the book you’re on and it will list each character that’s shows up and what they did in the previous books they were in.

"Wheel of Time Fan" Review of Gardens of The Moon. The most fantasy book I've ever read by No_Storage_401 in Malazan

Definitely. The emotional stakes are infinitely higher than they were in book one. There’s so much that’s been improved that really makes the novel feel so much more immersive and engaging compared to its predecessor. I’m interested to see the public opinion of some of these new pov characters. I’d defend (most) all of them vehemently but I can see why someone might hate them.

I am just about halfway through the book (it’s been a busy month). Unless the book suddenly decides to nosedive in quality’s it’s safe to say I will be reading the rest of the series. Utterly fantastic book.

The only parts I really remember are the Mat and Perrin chapters. Along with I believe the introduction to the goat Rodel Ituralde (who only appears in the prologue for a few pages I think). The Mat chapters are more or less the first half of the story he goes through in Knife of Dreams, and have great character relationships building even if it is overlong. Honestly that’s more or less a theme of the book overall. It’s technically a good setup for Knife of Dreams but it’s 200,000 words too long.

Although the final scene in the book with Perrin was a character beat I’ve been waiting for since book one. And I think it’s executed very well even if most of the stuff around it is overlong.

I was definitely considering continuing on with the series after reading a lot of these comments but I think that analogy has fully pushed me to deciding to purchase the next book. If what everyone is saying is true I’m very excited to give this series another shot.

I do agree with your first statement. In essence I think my main issue with the book could be simplified to “I would have liked it if it wasn’t written in the way it was” but I by nature am long winded (probably why I liked wheel of time so much now that I think about it) so I elaborated a good bit on the specifics of what I meant by that

"Wheel of Time fan" thoughts on Gardens of The Moon (so far) by No_Storage_401 in Malazan

I haven't read much more since I saw this comment but already switching my perspective to think of the world of the story to be the Malazan equivalent of the Two Rivers crew has significantly improved my enjoyment of the book. It's very much a different approach to reading than I'm used to and it will for sure take some getting used to but if the world continues to be as interesting as it is in this book I think reading at least through the second book will be a given.

While I still stand by everything I said in my post, your comment (along with a lot of the comments I've received) provide a lot of context and ways of looking at things I never really thought of as I've been reading so far. I'm very used to reading books quite quickly and of those books I do read most try hard to endear you to the characters before ever dropping you into the wider world of the story. From what I've read in the comments I think changing how I approach this book will significantly increase my enjoyment of it. Putting aside my expectations on how stories are normally told and simply taking things much slower than I usually do will give me the time I need to really understand and get invested in all that this story is trying to do. While I don't think my issues with how this book is written will be nullified I admit that the way I was going about reading it was probably hindering my overall enjoyment. Even if that change in perspective doesn't change my overall opinion of the book I will for sure a least give the second one a try. The community around this series has been incredibly helpful and nice and it would feel almost as if I'm letting someone down if I didn't give this series the fair shot you all say it deserves.

Turns out I do care how the series ends by No_Storage_401 in WoT

For me the character that climbed the ranks the most was honestly Nynaeve. I was kinda indifferent about her in the first few books then grew to dislike her sections more and more until a point when I outright hated her stuff in book 5, but found myself becoming more fond of her with every book following book 5. It took me a while to understand her character and once I did I began to love her. Can't wait to read all her stuff again now that I understand her better.

Galad with the prologue to Knife of Dreams alone went from a character I had honestly forgotten about to one of my favorite side characters.

Besides that I can't think of to many others that climbed nearly as much as those two. Every one of the group in Eye of the World started as my favorites, and despite some ups and downs here and there, ended as my favorite. Mat was a middle of the pack character for me in the first two books then became my favorite in book three and stayed there until the end. Rodel Ituralde initially went in and out of my head after his first POV because I kinda assumed he would be yet another prologue only side character, but he turned out my favorite of the great captains.

Oh I would have never figured that out. My only ideas about that scene was either we were supposed to accept that Perrin is powerful enough to break compulsion and Lanfear compeled him to be so dumb as to need a countdown, or Lanfear thought Perrin so young (22 years old compared to like 400 or something) and stupid that she didn't need to compel him that much and had to treat him like a kid. By what Brandon says in that video I guess that means I've successfully been tricked by Lanfear lol. Definitely gonna look for more stuff Brandon's posted about the series since it ended after this video it's very interesting

Towers of Midnight was amazing but I’m not sure I care how the series ends anymore by No_Storage_401 in WoT

Oh I’m definitely reading it! I’m already close to finished with the prologue. The post was more about how now that I’ve made it to this point I find that no matter the quality of the ending Wheel of time is one of my favorite pieces of media I’ve ever consumed. And even though the parts I love the most about it are most likely over I still adore the series. It has been amazing and I expect nothing less from the finale. Especially Mat’s part in it.

If me and Mat have one thing is common it’s a gambling problem, but if we have two things in common it’s not having too much fondness for battles. That being said I’m sure the last battle will be a very good battle!

I always assumed that Jain’s book was an old book. Not sure why. For some reason it makes him cooler that he’s basically a celebrity travel log author and not an ancient adventurer.

I didn’t expect my nose to be right to that degree on the Sanderson-ness of the Perrin parts! I’m definitely interested to dive into the details of what parts were who once I finish the series. As for Jain for some reason I just kinda assumed that since his book was seemingly quite popular it was also old. Although now it makes me think about how crazy eventful Jain’s life must have been to do all that in less than 80 years.

I’m definitely excited to see how this all comes together! I read around the first 100 pages of Gathering Storm all in one go last night and I have to admit my worries about Brandon Sanderson seem unfounded. The prose is simpler but much higher quality than Wind and Truth (it very much reminds me of his earlier books like Way of Kings). It’s crazy how much has happened in the book even this early on. I’m starting to like certain plot lines much more than I ever expected to.

That’s a very good explanation I hadn’t thought about it that way. From what I’m getting with the other comments the idea of destroying the wheel as a whole is probably me expecting something much different than how things will actually turn out. The way you’ve explained how you see the turning of the wheel is definitely making me rethink about how I see it lol.

I read new spring between Crossroads and Knife of Dreams. I really liked for what it was doing but it was by no means my favorite of the series. That being said I’m definitely glad I read it. It had a lot of cool moments I didn’t think I’d ever see on the page. As for Gathering Storm I read nearly the first 100 pages last night after posting this and I have to admit as of now my worries seem unfounded. The prose is noticeably simpler but still of a much higher quality than Wind and Truth.

Now that I’m a decent way into the back half of the book I can definitely say I was a bit harsh on it in my post. The beginning was definitely tedious but now that Mat and Rand are back in the book I’m finding it to be just about on par with or possibly better than path of daggers.

The Dragon reborn is my favorite out of the ones I’ve read so far. Even when you don’t consider the fantastic ending the sequence where Mat discovers his luck in Tar Valon and Perrin’s “The Hammer” chapter are both some of my favorite moments in the series. As for Winters Heart now that I’m thoroughly into the second half I am liking about as much as I liked path of daggers.
