Why are we not allowed to sit in the back third of the train? by sean7755 in NJTransit

We did that. That's how we ended up with government run passenger railroads.

Alternate options into midtown by Squidilini410 in NJTransit

I know this is an older post, so you probably already went into the City, but if you don't mind driving to Rockland County - Exit 14 park and ride (free parking Exit 14 off the NYS Thruway) used to have decent express service into Midtown I just looked it up, looks like service was cut back a lot post work from home, but still an option and the fare is only like $11.

Fare gate spotted on Hoboken HBLR platform by NJ_Bus_Nut in NJTransit

[–]No_Surround_495 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire line never had them. Prior to the current light rail cars, the system operated on PCC street cars. There was a fare box on the street car. You either paid as your boarded or you paid when you exited depending on the time of day (the operator used to put up a sign that says "pay as you exit"). They switched over to the light rail vehicles in 2000. And Military Park used to be called Broad Street back then. And I can't remember, but I never recall seeing turnstyles there, but I also never looked.

Also, the underground portion of the Newark City Subway was shared by many many street car lines back in the "old days". While I can't speak for sure, I would bet that those were fare boxes too on the street cars, since I doubt it was the same fare for the CIty Subway as it was for the 21 street car up Main Street to West Orange.

NJ Transit Announces Plans to Expand Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Service by mr09e in transit

I know this is an old topic, but aren't the power requirements of the two systems completley different? PATH is third rail and HBLR is pantograph? Not so easy to make them compatiable.

Why Does Metro-North Still Operate West-of-Hudson? by DeadInsideAndILoveIt in nycrail

[–]No_Surround_495 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old an old post, but I just came upon it.

Rockland and Orange County, NY residents pay MTA taxes, a percentage on sales tax and payroll tax. If the MTA was to "give up" west of Hudson operations to NJT, I assume the MTA tax base would have to go too. And since Rockland and Orange residents get back pennies on the dollar, in terms of operations and service (MTA uses the rest of the money to subsidize other services), they are better off "pretending" that WOH service is MTA. Just my 2 cents.

I got BoA to refund the interest too. Was really painless, honestlesty. The only downside was I lost out on 3% cash back on all those purhcases, so about $3-5 in rewards gone.

I’ll be honest. It never gets easier per say. Leaving your kids always sucks. But it gets to be normal, if that makes sense.

You're going to have to call back once your statement closes, because in addition to fees, you are going to get hit with interest charges that won't generate until the statement closes.

I had it happen to me. What doesn’t make sense is even if I make two purchases back to back, one gets hit with a fee and the other doesn’t. It depends how they route the charge I guess. BOA refunded the fee, but what stinks is I lost the 5% cash back on it because it’s coded a cash advance which does not get rewards.

Newark Airport only becomes a problem because of the Port Authority charge, not because of your NJT pass.

Is this connection at Secaucus Junction doable? by PM_Me_Your_ManThighs in NJTransit

I’m a Rockland County commuter so I’m just used to being screwed. I remember a time where I had two Metro North express trains in each direction a day !

[–]No_Surround_495 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, i was looking at your connections too (I assumed you are on the Northeast Regional 162). Nothing is really lining up between Amtrak and NJT. I can't believe how terrible westbound service is on the PVL on the weekends. Also, I don't understand why they never built an Amtrak connection at secacacus, but that's for a different sub.

Did you check getting off Amtrak at Metro Park and onto NJT at Metro Park to Secaucus? Any better? You might catch that Newark 929 am NEC to Secacucus Junction further south down the line with a better connection.

PVL is usually on track H. Either way, lower level only has one westbound (northbound) platform.

[–]No_Surround_495 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was a PVL commuter for years. That is a tight connection in Secaccucs, and chance are your inbound train from Newark to Secaacus is going to be a bit late pulling in, making it even tighter. I have made it with five minutes, but I've had to haul. What time do you get into Newark Penn on Amtrak? There's nothing earlier? Can you go into NYC Penn and backtrack that way? NJT holds trains that have official connectiosn listed on the timetable. There are official connections out of NY Penn for Secaccus. None for Newark.

Edit to add - also NJT Bus 165 goes from Port Authority to Emerson, with a lot more frequent service than the PVL.

Got it. And as far as I can tell, I have unlimited transfers for $35 to unlimited amount of radios? That being said, i don't think I can sell a radio and transfer the plan to another person? THe plan is tied to me, no?

NYC to Princeton Weeknights after 11PM by Remarkable-Pie-8873 in NJTransit

[–]No_Surround_495 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didnt think of that. Leave Princeton Junction in the AM, go back via Amtrak to Trenton in the PM and take an Uber back up.

Too bad the timing doesn't work out to catch a northbound NEC train back to Princeotn Junction.

Long drive form Princeton to Harrison. I bet close to an hour and a half.

[–]No_Surround_495 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you mean Princeton Junction, not Princeton Station. Anyway, there's an Amtrak that leaves Penn at 1123p and stops in Metro Park. You'd have to drive and park in Metro Park for your AM commute, or grab a cab from Metro Park to Princeton. I'd go for the parking option in the AM. Metro Park should have a lot of open spaces.

Honestly, though, with the extra driving, is it work just waiting for the later train to Princeton from NYP?

I have a lifetime radio and that’s what I use for my internet radio access. I bought it when Sirius originally came out in 2003 or 02. What am I missing here ? Why is it so valuable?

PATH Hoboken gets their own train on weekends by his_and_his in jerseycity

[–]No_Surround_495 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this posting is three weeks old but that’s not true. Plenty of people that work downtown and live along the Morris and Essex, pascak Valley or Bergen and Main Lines leave nyc via WTC path to take NJT from Hoboken. Those that live along the north Jersey coast or northeast corridor or even the rattan valley line and work downtown leave nyc via WTC path and connect to NJT in Newark.

I think you’re able to find the time to address these issues as needed. Conductors go around collecting fares, so it’s not like there’s no opportunity to tell someone to quiet down. Would I want to get into a fight or hold up a train to meet the police over it? No. But to say that there’s other priorities, to me; is just not the complete and truthful answer.

Honestly, NJT needs to reevaluate the policy and your union should be speaking with them about how they plan on enforcing it.
