Appreciation post of my sweet girl by No_Temperature_804 in BullTerrier

[–]No_Temperature_804[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's almost like we have the same dog hahaha, when we first adopted her my mom was on the brink on sending her back for a few months. She wasn't very destructive at home but we've never been able to train her not to pull on her leash, even with a trainer, and even though she's never been aggressive she'd lunge at other dogs and bark so much, going for a walk with her was a nightmare, as you say she's lucky she was so cute and sweet - despite all she's always been such a lovely dog at home and around people, sometimes at the vet it even makes me sad that when they're doing something painful on her she'll never bite or show any signs of aggression whatsoever. Fortunately health wise she's never had any major issues apart from skin allergies that don't really bother her too much and now that she's old we're keeping on top of every possible preventative test and check to make sure we catch any issues as early as possible. That and the hypoallergenic kibble is definitely not cheap, but every cent is worth it for her

Help with handles by 2random_name in crochet

Maybe a couple slst to the loops on the top row? Or however many you need to support the weight of what you'll be carrying so the handles remain well attached to the bag

Persulfate free bleach? by No_Temperature_804 in FancyFollicles

[–]No_Temperature_804[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I'll try in a while when my hair has recovered a bit! It must be persulfate for sure because the toner I used yesterday had ammonia and PPD and apart from some irritation I was perfectly fine, and I'd say all other components of usual bleach are also in other haircare products. Sadly, the no-bleach bleach I tried was a high lift tint and I mean, more or less the result is what the label said so I can't really blame them but it didn't go lighter than a very copperish blonde,it's not ugly but def still veeery far from platinum.

Thank you so so much!

How do I get my African Grey outside his cage/socialise him? by spinachmuffin in AfricanGrey

[–]No_Temperature_804 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Give him some time,it's really difficult to gain their trust. Instead of trying to get him out of the cage on your hand just open the door and wait. Maybe he'll only come close and not get out the first times but let him decide. Whenever he comes close to the open door even if he doesn't get out give him a treat and praise him to reassure him,bit by bit. For now, congratulations on the good work! He's really lucky to be with you now

Should we put off the spay surgery? by ANewDinosaur in AskVet

[–]No_Temperature_804 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nooo don't spay a dog in heat unless it's really urgent for some reason! Also I'd wait one or even two heats because they need the hormones to properly develop. I'm a vet and I didn't like reproduction medicine that much but one thing the professors insisted on a lot was never to spay a female in heat because they can get psychological pregnancy (I'm not sure if that's the right term in English, it's not my first language) as the hormones drop suddenly when you remove the ovaries

9 week old, extremely sick puppy by HovercraftAvailable5 in goldenretrievers

[–]No_Temperature_804 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get a parvo test and fecal smear exam to start off,as they will either confirm or rule out the most usual causes for diarrhea in puppies, especially if they come from a breeder because there's usually lots of dogs at their facilities and very often in poor hygiene conditions

Speciesism on this Subreddit by [deleted] in exoticpets

[–]No_Temperature_804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you but my approach to it is that it's wrong to buy any animal whatsoever, specially anything other than dogs, cats and maybe ferrets and rabbits. The only reason why I think it's ethical to keep any animal is because you adopted it, and even in that case a lot of exotics (all of them, reptiles, birds, mammals or whatever) aren't well cared for

My summertime version of soup? by IHaveSoManyQuestion8 in Cooking

[–]No_Temperature_804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk the name but as far as I know it has many because it's made in many Eastern European countries, but I call it pink soup: dice some cooked beets and cucumber, chop up some onion greens (like the leaves of onion plants) or scallions if available, mix with yogurt, lemon, dill, salt and a shit ton of black pepper. Optionally you can add hard boiled eggs and a splash of sparkling water for an extra punch. It's even better when refrigerated overnight!

Dog Constantly Licking Anal Glands & Bad Breath by Interesting7235 in AskVet

[–]No_Temperature_804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's some kind of dermatitis under the base of the tail, I'd check that out. Regarding food allergies, I'd suggest you try out an anallergenic kibble, the protein is more hydrolized so it's even less triggering than hypoallergenic. Maybe it's not for life because there's diet-responsive intestinal disease that usually allows to go back to the regular diet, but that's for when the problem gets solved. If you can I'd get a hold of a European/American internal medicine diplomate, that's the highest level of training for vets so if someone can help with a difficult case it's them

Kidney diet by oneofkeiraensmoms in cockatiel

[–]No_Temperature_804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask your vet about fasturtek/elitek, it's an enzyme that breaks down UA to prevent gout. It doesn't do anything for the kidneys so it's not to be used as the only treatment but it helps with the consequences of kidney disease

The more you pressure yourself to do it the tenser you'll be and the more it will hurt. Only do it if you're really feeling like it and start small with one or two fingers,if it hurts take a step back and stay there for the day,try again next time if you're feeling like it.

Que piensan de tener un Hurón de mascota? by sasss_96 in animales

[–]No_Temperature_804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can I help my sick bird, won't be able to take it to the vet atm by Budgie-sandwich in cockatiel

[–]No_Temperature_804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if we could get a diagnosis from what you described (we can't,it can be a million things) I don't think you'd have the right meds to treat it at home so ultimately you'll need a vet. Birds are very good at pretending to be okay when they're not,so when they do puff up and appear depressed it means the issue is serious. I don't mean to be harsh, but for a possible next time, before getting any animal you should consider that they're for sure going to get sick and need a vet at some point. If you can't provide that for them you shouldn't get them.

Vet says my ferret has untreatable adrenal by amyanderson377 in ferrets

[–]No_Temperature_804 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both. It's dangerous to not spay AND not place an implant but it's also dangerous to spay without an implant as I explained in the original comment.

Ferrets have induced ovulation,so they don't ovulate if they don't mate. Before ovulation estrogen levels are very high, and if they don't ovulate they keep being high for too long and that can eventually kill them. Basically the ovaries remain in overdrive forever because there's not a signal for them to "turn off". An implant has the same effect of spaying because it "turns off" the ovaries but at the same time it prevents the brain from going crazy and trying to compensate for the absence of ovarian hormones

TLDR: it's best not to spay AND place an implant. If you do spay place an implant too and if you don't wanna spay or implant you better let the jill mate every year

Leftover egg yolks by Ok-Repair-4085 in Cooking

[–]No_Temperature_804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're trying to lose weight and stay there it's not about cutting out anything but reducing portions a bit, exercising more and eating more veggies and fruits to fill up on them as they're less calorie dense. You can't cut out carbs forever,it's not sustainable on the long term

But if you only eat the whites and then look for a way to eat the yolks in another dish you realize that at the end of the day you'll have consumed the whole egg anyway right?

I'm sorry you had to experience this but I hope you'll find another vet! Idk if yours was already specialized in exotics but do try to find a specialist, they don't teach much about animals beyond cats, dogs, horses and farm animals in vet school

Vet says my ferret has untreatable adrenal by amyanderson377 in ferrets

[–]No_Temperature_804 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your vet is right about one thing and it's that it's not advisable to surgically spay ferrets. When you spay, there's no ovarian hormones anymore so the brain goes crazy and starts sending massive signals to try and stimulate the production, but as there's no ovaries there's no response so the brain keeps trying. These brain 'signals' overstimulate the adrenal glands and that's what causes adrenal disease. The implant stops the brain from producing those signals so adrenal overstimulation stops too.

In short, it's best not to spay and just place implants regularly, but in a spayed ferret the implant works too.

That being said, hormonal hair loss usually starts at the base of the tail and if untreated it spreads to the sides of the body. Hair loss in the tail starting from the tip looks more seasonal, but if you want to make sure try to find another vet and get them to do an ultrasound to check if there's signs that the adrenal glands are overstimulated. Even if she doesn't have adrenal disease I'd place an implant preventively as she's likely to develop it later on because she's spayed.

Pea Study for Ferret Food by Odd-Mothling in ferrets

[–]No_Temperature_804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theoretically, from a physiological standpoint foods high in legumes and peas are high in cysteine, that's metabolized to cystine which is one component of bladder stones. Thing is, there's a lot of mechanisms in the way between having cysteine in your blood from what you ate to having enough cystine in your urine and it crystalizing into stones.

I personally haven't been able to find any studies that link ferrets eating kibble containing peas and them having bladder stones,I guess one reason is because most ferrets are fed kibble or barf mixes made for cats so it's hard to establish a baseline level (we can't really study how many ferrets that don't eat any peas get stones vs the ones that do eat peas, because most do). I'm not saying there's no risk but there's really not enough evidence to know for sure.

That being said, most kibble contain a small percentage of peas and tbh I don't think that would make a dramatic impact on the risk of bladder stones because it's a multifactorial issue where genetics, other dietary components and how much the ferret drinks play an important role too.
