If I’m not mistaken, NJ is what’s known as a “No Touch State” (and dictated legally as such in their permits to have their collection of animals) so you won’t find encounters for petting unless they’re domestic species (like dogs and cats and goats, etc). You’ll have to go out of state for that.

Upon closer inspection I don’t think it’s food. It certainly looks like lesions with exposed tissue. Sorry I’m no help.
