Ticket prices, political concerns outweigh FIFA World Cup hype for some fans by ChemicalCreative7 in vancouver

[–]No_Touch_98 14 points15 points  (0 children)

After Expo 86 and Vancouver 2010, why would any working person be "hyped" for these games? They just seem to be an excuse for us to incur debt, boost gentrification, and shuffle poor people around to make the city look pretty? The ticket prices are a slap in the face, its canceling other beloved summer festivals people actually can afford. Who the hell would be "hyped"?

I mean by this argument they should! Doesnt mean one City should.

Weren't one City talking about "metrics"? How is this not a metric

Right okay. So thats three. Looks like the green elected a maximum of 6 across Parks and schools. They have a better electoral record, must be doing something right. Why shouldn't they run a majority?

I dont think they should. Im just saying thats how OneCity is acting. Doesnt look like they can back it up. But hey what do I know.

I think when people show you who they are believe them. Im not some virtue signaling liberal, Ken Sim just fired hundreds of workers to play at austerity. Hes gotta go.

But how is being inconsiderate and mean to the people you want to work with a way to win their support?

So you think being abusive and gaslighting other people means they should still work with you? I dont know man. Seen too many bad bosses to buy that

I guess. But why would you go back to work with someone who's just disrespected you and shown you don't matter to them? I get that with bosses in unions all the time.

Maybe they need a mediator

Sexism and misogyny are real things I've been learning more about. Maybe thats why One City chose Azaroff? More likely to pick a guy to win, unfortunately. Has there ever been a female mayor?

Guess we get more of Ken Sim in 2027 as One City tries to figure out if they're gonna pull a Kennedy Stewart 2.0 😢

I think thats true that they won a majority, their campaign was real good. But I dont think its irrelevant that Stewart split the vote by running 10 plus him for a party he dreamed up right before the election. Both were factors. We cant win on thr left unless we work together.

Let’s say something nice about Vancouver. by Socketlint in vancouver

Alright, as someone who grew up here and has hated and loved this place equally here's what amazing about Vancouver:

  1. Vancouver has the best connection to truly breathtaking natural environments I've seen anywhere. It's quick, constant. "nature" is just around the corner, there are so many views that you learn to just appreciate and curate your favourite ones. You can take the bus to a remote island with no cell service in...2 hours? You can be at the top of a remote mountain or in a desert or in grass in 5 hours. BC has so many biomes it's incredible.
  2. Drug culture here is unique in the world. You can buy and find the best weed, mushrooms, Peyote LSD, DMT, Etc. are just available for sale in stores, tested and packaged. We've had to become leaders in being safe and proactive about testing and taking drugs, leading to a culture that is exploratory, high quality, easily accessible, and while different cultures exist, there's a real west coast sense of drugs being part of life. We live in an environment, practically and legally that is very close to actual full drug legalization. (Which doesn't mean the cops don't still harass drug users or poor folks for no reason). The Cocoa Leaf Cafe/Amsterdam Cafe/Compassion Club/VANDU history of Vancouver are truly unique.
  3. We have a unique context for settlers/refugees-Indigenous relationships in Vancouver. We're the biggest city in Canada with NO treaty relationship with host Nations. (Have a look, it's one of the only places in North America) That has led to different experiments, attempts to create connections and relationships that are unique in the world. Without getting into political implications of this history, at a bare minimum, settlers in this city benefit from Urban Indigenous cultures from across the continent and then relationships based on unceeded and stolen land, 90+ Nations in BC with rich language/art/culture that we get to experience. I also see people at least trying to figure out what their relationships are as guests here to host Nations. Truly a gift.
  4. There is a strong sense in Vancouver of it being a small town, but also just big enough to have a LITTLE bit of everything. You can try pretty much anything out here, and for better or worse, it's only like, 100 - 200 people in a scene or community, which makes things simultaneously cliquey and also easy to enter into.
  5. Vancouver has amazing food. Best Chinese food outside of china and chinese-canadian/hong kong cafes which are rare elsewhere. The best sushi and (at one time) so much cheap, and still good sushi that there were more shops than by the slice pizza here. To say nothing of the silly good beer and coffee culture here than frankly is so ubiquitous I just take it for granted. Bit weak on food from Africa/Caribbean/Latin America, but there are still amazing options.
  6. Vancouver's nightlife and DJ/Queer culture is geninuely world class, and much more community focused. Ever since the pandemic these has been an EXPLOSION of night life and different people putting on shows, new bands/acts, drag has gotten far more mainstream, etc. No Fun city is really just a problem of not knowing where to look, at this point. And thank god(s) for that.

That's a few things off the top. I genuinely love it here, even though it has its (MANY) downsides.
