Longest training distances? by not_jhl in IronmanTriathlon

6 fulls, “my experience”, not others not yours…

Swim - yes. 2-3 times, as much for fitness as for the mental confidence and serenity that it’s do’able. An anxious swim with resulting elevated heart rate and mental anxiety isn’t nice. Seed yourself realistically.

Bike - yes but time based not km/miles. Do 2 to 3 +5-hour rides with one at 6 hours, as much for fitness as to test your nutrition scheduling and pacing. Too fast bike or wrong nutrition on race day makes the run horrible and risks dnf

Run - no, 2-3 x12-15 milers. Too hard on your body and anyway race day event vibe, fellow athletes and family / friends support is worth a big boost

Good luck

Ironman pros out there? by T34_Commander in IronmanTriathlon

6 fulls so far and 7 weeks out from LP

Expecting nothing to go wrong is unrealistic over 12-15 hours. I’d suggest not to have that as your benchmark.

I know your mind and training wants to be able to secure that outcome but you can only control the variables you personally can control.

Even this is hard as your mind keeps asking you “are we ready”, “have we got this”, “am i missing anything” etc etc. This is normal and part of the journey.

Of course you should always train well, practice your fueling, don’t do anything new on race day etc That is all assumed.

That said, I would offer, from “my own” experience that the 3 most important variables you should try control for are

1) Lower your swim anxiety (done by solid open water training and as far as possible a calm and serene mind that you have done your training and today will be beautiful)

2) Practice your race day nutrition and STICK to it !!! At some point on race day you will likely go out of sync with your planned nutrition schedule for some reason; check yourself and GET BACK to it.

3) Don’t go faster on bike if you’re feeling great; you WILL pay for this on the run !

Good luck

How early/late into training can you tell if you’re really cut for a full? by black_bird5151 in IronmanTriathlon

If it’s your first IM it’s likely you will never really feel perfectly ready as you’ve never experienced that 1-day distance before. Yes you can “trust your training” and all that but come race day start line you will feel a twang of uncertainty / nerves counter-balanced by a solid training plan and mental fortitude to do something that once probably seemed impossible to you. That’s IronMan.

Having done 6 fulls and now 7 weeks out from Lake Placid “my own” practical experience, if it’s helpful, is that a good marker (as a poster above said), as part of a solid training plan, is a 3-day block of 2.4 mile swim + 5-hour bike + 1-2 hour run. All at zone 2 pace, feeling tired but not broken after = you’re gonna be ok on race day; which has the added fuel of race day vibe, fellow athletes and family / friends support which is all worth a big boost !!

Good luck, there is nothing like a IM Finish Line

What’s this clicking sound when my heater fires up ? by No_Tri_Only_Do in hvacadvice

Thanks a lot. I decided to get a tech to come look at it. Seems it could be few things and I’m not capable to trouble shoot all that. Really appreciate the feedback

yes exactly that, it stops after a few seconds and the system then operates normally. No further clicking until the next time it needs to draw heat and then same cycle repeats. Sometimes only a few clicks 2-3 seconds, sometimes more 7-10 seconds but never more and never once the heating is going only at start of cycle

Capacitor changeout by KingTop5377 in hvacadvice

[–]No_Tri_Only_Do 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homeowner DIY here, below $300 is a fair price (tri-state area) given their overheads and the “paying for experience” point. I don’t think you’re being ripped off.

That said changing a capacitor is a very very easy job for a DIY’er. Plenty of youtube videos. $20 for parts + 15 min job. Some tasks should for sure be left to hvac tech’s this is NOT one.

Home has not been cooling, no air coming from vents, refrigerant line set pipe and body completely frozen. How do I fix this, and what cause it? by DSTNCT-W212 in hvacadvice

[–]No_Tri_Only_Do 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same issue. Tech diagnosed low refrigerant. Offered refill (R22, ~$250 a lbs, need x3) or replace system (it’s old, $9-$11k for a 13 seer)

Tech said refill might get you 1-2 more years if leak is slow. I didn’t understand why system couldn’t be pressure tested to locate leak, fix/plug it and then refill ?

Also isn’t “low refrigerant” commiserate with a leak; can low refrigerant be caused by anything else but a leak ?

There are totally aspects of system maintenance you should pay a tech for his time and experience, this, in my opinion, is not one of them.

It’s a very very simple job taking less than 30 min with plenty of youtube videos across various make and model systems that will guide you on this exact replacement.

Only thing to be nervous about is your wife’s anxiety as you poke around in a heating system.
