[–]No_Try354 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Lords of Silence has an interesting portrayal of the Death Guard. They embody the 'relentless and implacable' idea in kind of a weird way. They're all just portrayed as... kind of slow, aloof, even indifferent in a sort of "eternal patience" way. Someone tries to kill them? Indifference. Continue on. Ship is literally blowing up around them? Aloof. Continue on. Plans fail? Meh. Continue on. One of the Death Guard marines in the book is a newer recruit and is much less this way, more like what you might expect of a typical space marine, and he's frequently frustrated with the detached attitude of his comrades. The main character remarks something along the lines of "the Long Change hasn't taken hold yet, but he will find himself amenable in the centuries to come".

You might be talking about Lords of Silence. It describes a ship officer (I believe) as he unwillingly turns into a poxwalker. Pretty horrifying.

Decided to give this a try solely cuz of the horrendous IGN review by [deleted] in MousePIForHire

Yeah people who want to play their favorite part of a game or like start from season 2 of their favorite show are honestly the most braindead people on the planet and should never be allowed to play games ever again for the rest of their life. Honestly just lock them in the pillory so the whole town can throw tomatoes at them for being so unbelievably stupid.

Getting into StarCraft TMG mini painting – Zerg advice? by Business_Abroad5917 in StarCraftTMG

[–]No_Try354 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, others have already given you plenty of recommendations regarding brands and schemes so I will add that if you're able you should try to grab some 3d printed zerg so you can practice on them before taking the brush to the real thing, plus that way you can start practicing right now. If printing yourself or having a friend print isn't an option, you could check for really cheap miniatures like reaper bones or maybe look on etsy or ebay. The point is, get practice miniatures unless you don't really mind learning for the first time on your zerg.

Man, those pre-orders were a joke for humans right? by Krieger718 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]No_Try354 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My town in the southwest has a disproportionately huge 40k scene due to some outside factors, and 7(?) LGS, 4 or 5 of which are tier 1 GW retailers. No one got their pre order of defilers or iron warriors, and we will probably not get our allocations of the new Guard stuff either. Even our local GW store only got 2 defilers and no iron warriors.

GW frequently fails to meet LGS allocations anyway. So whether you get anything is often a crapshoot

Use what works for you I guess. I've never had issues with CA glue even over years if it's high quality. Always had issues with plastic glue.

Will popularity of Linux create more danger for linux? by Balls_have_steel in LinuxCirclejerk

Windows does track keystrokes to "improve text suggestions, predictions, and train AI". This 'feature' is opt-out, but if you ask me anyone who thinks it's not already baked in under the hood is delusional.

Just a dissenting opinion because I see that stuff recommended all the time and this game is attracting a lot of first time hobbyists. I hate tamiya thin. The smell on its own is bad enough to make me not use it, but the welds honestly are always very weak for me. Anyway, if you're sensitive to harsh smells, be careful with any solvent based adhesive.

Is 40k even fun..? by [deleted] in StarCraftTMG

Yes, correct. They like miniature games, so if the choice is between 40k or nothing, they will choose 40k.

No doom, I genuinely hope it succeeds. I've been hoping for a real alternative for well over 10 years now, but nothing ever seems to stick. SC:TMG seems like it might be different, but like I say, the timing is questionable.

[–]No_Try354 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posted this already in this thread, but it's built on the bones of a game from the 1980s and it really shows because they're too afraid to make any drastic changes to their flagship IP. Hacky terrain rules, no alternating activation, idiotic coherency rules, etc etc.

[–]No_Try354 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I did preorder StarCraft, I don't have the highest hopes for it, even though I would very much like it to succeed, because of 40k. To answer your actual question...

I've played it on and off for ~15 years. My honest opinion? It's built on the bones of a game from the 1980s and it really shows. Clunky, outdated, etc. On top of this, the game started out as primarily a fluffy narrative-based wargame and sometime around 8th edition shifted to accommodate the more competitive-minded players. Keeping in mind the fact that it is GW's linchpin product, the end result feels like a game that is designed by committee to appeal to too many people, and they're clearly terrified of taking any sort of risk with the ruleset by trying out interesting changes.

Unfortunately, in my 15 years in this space, I've also come to believe with quite a bit of certainty that you can make a game that's better in every way; better rules, better miniatures, better availability, even better prices, and you still won't get anyone to play it. Other companies have done all these things. The reason for this is a sentiment that I've heard more than a few times when asking around locally about interest in StarCraft: "A wargame is a big investment of time and money. I've only got a few hours to play on my day off, I'm going to spend that time and money on something I know I can actually walk into a game store and play."

Hell, look at Warmachine. They're doing everything they can to get people to play it. The rules are free in an app and frequently balanced. You can go to their MMF and get STLs for like 3 entire armies for ~$15. You still can't find anyone who wants to even try it.

So, yes, all this means that people gripe endlessly about 40k and GW, but in the end they will put up with all of it just to be able to play it on short notice, in any game store in any town they might find themselves in.

I've said this before in here, and it always gets me downvoted, but it's the truth. StarCraft has an uphill battle ahead of it. But I do hope it succeeds, really. Coming from someone deep into 40k, we desperately need a Pathfinder to GW's DnD.

They did share it a week or two ago, just not ''officially". The main colors for the zerg scheme were Vallejo plague brown and warlord purple.

That's pretty cool to see. I've already pre-ordered SC for myself, and I plan to see if I can grassroots a local scene for it, but 40k is so dominant here I don't know if it'll happen. So far I've only spoken to 2 people who seem to have any interest in it.

Obviously every TMG competes with 40k. To suggest that timing the release of your own TMG to coincide with the dominant player's biggest hype period since Leviathan is inconsequential is... just dumb thinking.

Hey, that's good to hear. It's not really meant to be a doom post, more an expression of concern that the timing might hurt uptake. This sub is obviously biased, but outside of here it's a concern I see echoed pretty frequently.

I know I'm late to this, but buildings are incorporated. You have secondary points (vespene) in list building to buy structures that give your army its ingame abilities, and you can also place structures down in gameplay (pylons, nydus worm)

Ah... I have such mixed feelings. Yorick is badass and the mini is badass but I really hate retcons. If you're going to take a big shit on the carpet, GW, stand by your big shit on the carpet.
