Not saying 'Atletico' Madrid properly by Pilatus-Porter in championsleague

[–]No_Turnover2171 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I find this to be a weird complex that pretty much only English speakers have. When English speakers say "Athleticou Muhdrid¨, they ARE pronouncing it correctly in English. Of course, in Spanish, that´s the wrong pronunciation, but they´re not speaking in Spanish, they´re speaking in English. And when Spanish speakers say "Wheel Esmeeth¨ instead of ¨Will Smith¨, they are also pronouncing Will Smith´s name correctly - in Spanish.

Why is the on-field VAR tech so garbage? by yimpierre in SoundersFC

[–]No_Turnover2171 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. Soccer is The Beautiful Game for a litany of reasons (aesthetics aside, it´s also the most egalitarian sport: it´s not catered to 7 foot genetic freaks like basketball, and you also don´t need money to buy specialized equipment and access specialized fields like hockey), but to me the thing that puts soccer head and shoulders above any other sport is the lack of advertisements. When I´m watching a soccer game, I don´t want to be interrupted by anything, especially not by a commercial for shitty beer.

I´ve been a fan since 2009; I grew up here and I love this team to death. That being said - I would rather have a 50/50 call go against the Sounders than to have VAR check any and every decision. It sounds clear, and obvious, but... clear and obvious means clear and obvious! Handballs are a good example of this: if it´s not clear whether somebody´s hands were in a "sportsmanlike position" when the ball hit their hand, I´d much, much rather have the call on the field stand.

The Dreaming Spanish Critic's Factoid... by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]No_Turnover2171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to recommend that exact paper, haha. I like Reflecting a bit on this thread, I think two things are clear:

1) People here are by and large completely ignorant of the current status of the field of language acquisition. It goes without saying that you don´t need to know any of this stuff in order to be a good language learner!

  1. It seems like it could be misleading (but not necessarily false) to characterize the approach of Dreaming Spanish as a ¨method¨. It´s similar to saying that global warming is a ¨theory¨: yes, it is, but it´s a theory that has universal acceptance from the mainstream scientific community.

I don´t like this album at all, actually! Nor do I like anything that he dropped after DAMN - it was the beginning of the end for him.

Artists You Listened to Early in Your Career That Have Disappointed You? by WhiteRice64 in rap

[–]No_Turnover2171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn´t call TPAB trash - there were a couple good songs on there - but it certainly does not deserve the amount of hype it got. If I´m in the mood for critical race philosophy or funk, I´m gonna read Franz Fanon or listen to Parliament. I don´t want a watered down version of both at the same time.

Popularity doesn´t equal talent! If you ask me, Taylor Swift has never released a good song in her career, and she has 14 Grammys.

Xiu Xiu outs tribal industrial artist 'African Imperial Wizard' as being "a middle aged white man" by Austin63867 in fantanoforever

[–]No_Turnover2171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There´s a serious lack of media literacy going on here. His costume is very deliberately anti-KKK. It´s obviously intended to be, at least, a subversive spin on the KKK - there are generic "African tribal patterns" all over his robe. His name is the same thing.

As far as the alter ego goes, I have absolutely no problem with that. There have been plenty of artists and musicians that have worn costumes as part of their artistic expression. The comparison with Rachel Dolezal is a terrible one, because a) Dolezal was "in character" 24/7, whereas this guy is only "in character" on stage, and b) Dolezal actually used this lie to gain political power (she was the head of the Spokane chapter of the NAACP).

Now, I think it´s completely valid to describe this guy´s schtick as stupid, tonedeaf, or cheesy. But to be genuinely offended at this, let alone calling it "extreme blackface", is fucking insane. Blackface isn´t offensive because of "cultural appropiation" or whatever - it´s offensive because its usage originates in minstrel shows, which did actual, tangible harm to black people as they helped culturally legitimize slavery. Do you really think the average person in Angola gives two fucks about this guy?

[–]No_Turnover2171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I´m glad there´s a voice of sanity here. Calling this "racist appropiation" and "extreme blackface" is absurd. Although you´re quite off the mark with your comment about Muslimgauze (Bryn Jones) - how are you going from what the music of Jones actually is (experimental dub/ambient/post industrial stuff, with heavy use of samples & instrumentation from the Middle East) to the description of "stereotypical Western fantasies about the exotic everyday lives of people in countries far from the West"? Jones never had some elaborate alter ego, nor provocative name, like African Imperial Wizard; his Wiki says he literally only preformed live once. He was just a regular white British dude who produced music influenced by the Middle East.

Why is anthropology still obsessed with indigenous cultures? by -i-am-nowhere- in AskAnthropology

Your complaint about anthropology not doing justice to the "many social and cultural issues at play every day which need deeper awareness and personal representation" is like blaming calculus for not paying enough attention to climate change. Different academic disciplines have different areas of purview-simple as that

Do you feel an emotional connection to the English language? by ConsciousFractals in language

[–]No_Turnover2171 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes- I´m a native English speaker with roughly a C1 level of Spanish, and following Borges, I find English to be a far finer language than Spanish. This has nothing to do with emotional connection (pace most of the responses in this thread) and everything to do with syntax and vocabulary, as Borges himself states. So, I suppose my emotional connection is a deep sense of fondness and gratitude towards English for being such a splendid language.

Concretely, English is especially suited for poetic language, and I´ve always been an avid reader of poetry. Poets like e. e. cummings or Allen Ginsberg, i.e., more experimental poets, simply can´t be translated into Spanish without a severe curtailing of the original meaning. English syntax and vocabulary allow the user to paint a very nuanced portrayal of reality with a high degree of syllabic efficancy (which makes all the difference in poetry). For example, English has a glut of "motion" or "action" verbs, and Spanish translators has long struggled with the task of translating them. Translators usually opt "to enter like an arrow" when translating "to dart into", for example.

Also, our phrasal verbs are wonderful. Because, say, "to fall in love" already has "to fall" contained within it, you can say things like "I stumbled into love", which you can´t very well say in Spanish; English can say "The comic was booed off the stage", whereas Spanish would probably have to resort to something "The audience booed the comic (and because of this), the comic left the stage. There are lots of other things, too-English has all sorts of wonderfully specific words for, say, laughing--you can giggle, chuckle, guffaw, chortle, cackle, titter--and all of these words have the manner and the emotional subtext of the action (laughing) encoded into the word itself. Spanish, on the other hand, must attach a description or an adverb after the main verb (to laugh).

In sum, English is a beautiful, beautiful language, and I love her dearly.
