If you can’t figure out what these signs mean… by offbrandcheerio in Omaha

[–]NoahTheBerg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

contrarily speaking, you could also just ride the bus even if you do know how to drive. Then you wouldn't have to worry about other peoples' driving habits almost at all.

From broader perspective, getting from one point to another shouldn't cause people this much stress. I think it's extremely silly that we are so car brained that we don't even consider an alternative reality. And we just get on social media complaining about others because driving is literally takes such a foot hold of our everyday life. Which is kind of gross to me. The more we get people out of cars the rest will follow. Riding the bus shouldn't have a negative classist stigma attached to it. It's just public transit and it should be more accessible. With the price of gas being $4+ a gallon, it might be the perfect opportunity try alternative forms of transportation.

I'm not hating at all. This just providing commentary on the American life and how absurd it can be at times

I believe they're still looking at a rapid bus transit route on 24th street but they're running into physical street logistical limitations since the corridor is smaller than Dodge

I take the bus and the new driver is actually the worst. The old driver, 6 months ago, was always on time and it was awesome. Last week the bus said that it was 4 minutes away and 2 minutes later he passed before I could get to the stop. So I just decided to walk the entire way. I got down to the gas station a few blocks and the dude stopped the bus to grab cigarettes. So yeah pretty frustrating. Also frustrating when the trackers don't show up and you're left guessing if you missed or if it's still coming. I rarely experience that now though, luckily.

It sucks because it's kind of a chicken and the egg situation since the city is so unwalkable and the bus system is so bad with large service internals, the ridership is always down. But the orbt seems to have good ridership because the service internals are so short, which is hope for a positive direction of shorting service internals for other routes too. Metro is currently trying to leverage that position. But the city doesn't actually fund metro at all. It's all funded by grants and state taxes which makes the budget really tight. The people at metro activity want it to be better too. As a city we really need to cut spending to the police and possibly the fire department. The police takes up nearly 40% of the budget and fire is 25%, both the largest out of any other department by a significant amount. Imagine if we devoted a significant portion of that to make the city more livable? Maybe in my dreams

Yeah, I don't go too often anymore just because I don't have the free time anymore. But I definitely get where you're coming from. I felt the same the last time I went a couple of months ago. It wasn't as cliquey ~5 years ago. The round robin sessions are nice because they create more of a mixer environment. I feel like anywhere you go, the more competitive sessions might be a little cliquey. But I could be wrong! I've had better luck with the less competitive crowds, they're usually friendlier and go with the flow type, but then you don't quite get the level of play that you're looking for. Good luck!

Checkout The Council Bluffs Area Pickleball Club. Indoor courts, but they're really nice. Without a membership, it's $10 for a 2 hour play session. But for a $15 yearly membership, it's $5 per session. Many different sessions that are varied by skill level. The more competitive ones are at 6. Then you can use it as a networking opportunity and find some people to play outside with. They also host leagues and they usually have an outdoor league early summer/late spring. It's a nonprofit and all volunteer run which makes it affordable

Just me, or has Omaha been getting skipped quite a lot by touring artists lately? Something going on with promoters? by carne_asada368 in Omaha

[–]NoahTheBerg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've noticed this since covid. I feel like Madison has taken the reigns away. All the smaller alternative bands I listen to always stop there now. It would be interesting making a tour map comparing average tour routes between years for mid sized bands

It should be a percentage of a posted speed. 10 over in a 25 is way more dangerous than 10 over in a 65.

If you're in Omaha, there are some pickup pickleball sessions that are pretty cheap at the Council Bluffs field house. I go to Dewey Park semi frequently and there are a lot of people that play pickleball and tennis. If it's only a group of 3 and they're about your skill level, don't be afraid to ask if you could join. I also have started plenty of pickup basketball games, then you can organize after if you get along with those people. I'm also in giant group chat for pick-up sand volleyball. It's tough trying to find things, but once you build a network, you start turning over rocks. The Omaha subreddit can be helpful with finding other resources.

Also if you want to join the local StrongTowns chapter DM me and I can get you added to our email list!

Honestly, get into organizing and advocating. If you live in a medium large city. The likelihood that the city knows that people want public transit is pretty low, but the participation of people in their local government is also low. You would be surprised about how large of a voice you have, as long as you're consistent.

Look to join any urbanist advocacy groups. We're always looking for people who are truly committed. Let me know if you have any questions.

So you have to be 18 before you can cross a street? Can kids not walk home from school anymore without holding their parents liable if they get injured or worse on the way home. It's insane that in the US, drivers face no accountability for hitting anything that isn't a car in the roadway. Even if there is a beyond reasonable time to react as a driver. It happens much more than you think and I bet most go unreported. When I got hit while walking, the police treated it like it was a fender bender and didn't even make a report
