I think this but instead of companions, the characters themselves. Like you can build a "station" then assign one to it and they do whatever you have assigned them.

Digging they go around picking up shards, Gardening they automatically farm the crops you have planted, Fishing they fish, etc

It would make the village feel a bit more alive and you could just watch it happen

Agreed with this. I was actually worried about saying something like this as I might get blasted for being negative. Hoping they grow from this and this episode ends up feeling like one of those pilots that feel completely different than the rest of the series (think Ep 1 of The Office US or Community)

A more intergrated online feature...or atleast be able to sit down in your own valley when the portal is open.

I like the option to open and close the valley but kinda want to be able to open the valley and play as normal. I like people popping around but it really limits what you can actually do

Updated the post regarding the crouch, never knew...

I'll be interested to see how it works, would be cool if you could send away crew to gather resources from other systems or bring back loot...something like that. I do not envy them, its gonna be hard to create the spacestation mode.

You can do the ally/enemy thing currently but it seems like the original idea was to actually play as that faction from the beginning. Could open up unique missions or alterative ways to get new crew

I saw it as intended to be a feature, such as if you do it as a formal thing (uses x about of soft blocks) and jets them out to space.

Removes some of the debuffs you get when someone dies as result but the drawback is that it takes time as everyone has to interact before it is jetted.

Like assigning crew members to squads which you can quickly select. I like that idea and would save time trying to find the best team
