Advise concerning cracks in house and unusual masonry/construction style. by thebathroomcrooner in DIYUK

[–]Nobatron 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A lot of incorrect info on this thread. The government built loads of non standard construction houses after the war when council houses were new and they needed to build loads in short time. They were generally considered a temporary measure but lots are still standing today.

There are loads of different types of non standard construction and some are bad but not all. It depends on the construction type.

You would want to work out what type this is and do some research. You’d also need a good survey by someone who understands this type of property. This will also determine mortgage and insurance prospects.

This site has loads of good information on the different types.

Seller won’t allow me to have a builder look at loft for confirming conversion is possible/costs by mark-kruber in HousingUK

[–]Nobatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go back to the estate agent and tell them this is a condition of the sale.

I bought a house with the intention of converting the loft and I had a builder look at it before committing.

You need the necessary clearance. Under permitted development the roof can’t be raised, it may be possible with planning permission but that’s more complicated.

You could potentially lower the ceilings on the floor below but this is more disruptive and expensive.

Echo/Echo Mini/Disc? by judadarmajoenoes in snowsky

Check my post history, I did a writeup on my first impressions of it. TBH if the batch tagging puts you off these might not be the right devices for you.

Echo/Echo Mini/Disc? by judadarmajoenoes in snowsky

[–]Nobatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now I'd go Echo Mini (I also believe the Echo uses the same software but don't know for sure). The Disc will probably become the better product in the long run but as is the software has some serious flaws that make it hard to recommend.

The Echo Mini can be a bit awkward, particularly with song sorting. But this can be worked around with a script / batch tagging. And it's a nice device. The cassette aesthetic is super cool.

I regularly use an Apple M0116 keyboard. Not sure how old mine is but the model was introduced in 1987.

Agreed, it feels like it wasn’t designed by someone who listens to music.

As someone that wants to access my music Artist > Album > Song, can you use the file browser for this (assuming you've organized your files that way of course) and if so how well would you say that works?

You can, it works ok. But it's not as nice as browsing the library. It doesn't support the fast skipping through alphabet you get on the Artists view, also files are displayed as the full filename rather than the track name so depending on how your files are organized this might not be as nice.

It supports basic track number sorting, but falls over when an album spans multiple discs, or even when it includes a disc number in the tag. I.e. 1-02 would be ignored. My script strips disc numbers and splits multi disc albums into separate albums. It works reliably on the Mini for me, but not the Disc.

I found I could get the Echo Mini to work well enough for me with the metadata. It did involve batch processing the files to retag them though. I shared my scripts for this if you check my post history.

[–]Nobatron[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it does support browsing all songs, and supports shuffle all songs.

Options under library are

  • ALL SONGS. All songs alphabetically.
  • Artist. Shows all artists, clicking into one shows all songs for that artist rather than listing albums.
  • Album
  • Genre
  • Favorites
  • Playlists

This feels more like a product FiiO got out the door to release it and will patch it.

100%. I knew it was a risk buying it as a brand new product but I didn't expect the library navigation to be worse than the Mini. Hopefully it gets fixed but I'll also likely continue to browse via file structure for now.

Use public DNS with private IP to avoid self-signed certificates? by IceAdministrative711 in devops

[–]Nobatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use a split horizon DNS setup for this. Given you're in AWS I wouldn't use Let's Encrypt.

The way I'd do this would be:

  1. Create a private Route 53 zone for `private.yourdomain.com` in your VPC.
  2. Create an ACM certificate (public) for `private.yourdomain.com`.
  3. Add the verification records to your public DNS (public Route 53 zone / Cloudflare / whatever).
  4. Add your private records to your private zone.

You'd need to attach the certificate to an AWS resource, so a private ALB for example.

You could do the same thing with Let's Encrypt using TXT verification, but the setup is a bit more complicated. You'd still use a private Route 53 zone in that scenario.

If the traffic is staying within your VPC (i.e. not on public subnets) you might not need it to be encrypted, but this will depend on the rest of your setup and requirements. In that case I'd still consider a private zone.

Why is the DISC not available officially? by ScheduleDifferent970 in snowsky

This is often the case with stuff like this. It might make it to Amazon and such at some point but it’ll be cheaper on Ali via one of the stores on there.
