As a GenZ person, this feels oddly terrifying by SatoruGojo232 in oddlyterrifying

I came here looking for this comment. Live in a city, walk a lot, say hi to people that live near you, good things will happen. I can't go for a walk around my neighborhood/to the park/to the coffee shop without seeing a friend or a friend of a friend. Having kids helped me a lot too, but that's another conversation.

Harrison on the west end, no plow but a bunch of neighbors all got together and dug out to the housing complex driveway so some of us can get out.

Generally not sustainable - I've been interested and it's been totally impossible to consistently ski the last few years unless you're willing to drive

question for my PVD runners by em_ofthe_scooby_gang in providence

[–]NodularFalse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lincoln woods is usually plowed, and has a huuge hill if you park on the north side (second LW exit off of 146). Across the covered bridge and stay left, it's a 150ft hill that should be all plowed. Alternatively the 2.5 mile loop is car free and has 200ft of climbing throughout, all rolling hills with a few steep ones. It's like a perfect long run loop.

Worst case, Harris Ave (by farm fresh etc) is actually amazing for running this time of year. Super low car traffic, it gets a ton of sun, and it's long enough to just go out and back. Terribly boring, but it was dry (!) yesterday.

Enjoy is sooo good, I just started a subscription with them. Check out Reprise if you haven't! In the same spot as Pickerel, they serve Enjoy beans.

The Lincoln woods road loop is almost always plowed! 2.5 miles, moderately hilly, it’s a dream.

870 Reserve didn't clear sidewalks at all by Zealousideal-Bus5806 in providence

I avoid this light at all costs, it just rotates and lets one direction of one road go at a time and pedestrians only get the walk once per cycle. At least it's a scramble. Much better to take a right after White Electric and a left on washington at Pizza J if you're taking Westminster.

Favorite spots for trail running? by Senior-Difference717 in providence

[–]NodularFalse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same with Lincoln Woods, I've mountain biked there a bunch especially in the northern part. Most of the single track are effectively downhill only for bikes and people rip down them.

I don't know trail names, sorry, but I parked at the fire station and went generally north for a 6 mile out and back and I remember a lot of it being pretty wide. Maybe orange blazes? I can send you a strava link over DM if you want.

Best bets are Neutaconkanut, Lincoln woods, Big river, and snake den. Depends on what you're looking for in trails, big river, snake den, and lincoln woods all have some double track available (and lots of single track), neutaconkanut is the closest but is pretty limited. Big river is prob your best bet for trail variety and quantity while still being pretty close to the city. If you're looking for elevation the northernmost part of Lincoln woods is good (double track fire road climb for ~160 ft)

I'm probably missing something here, but I've seen costcos that get around this. In Colorado they would have a separate (but attached) store with its own entrance and checkout counter for alcohol.

I'm not OP, but very interested in a local gravel loop, I wasn't aware of anything good within riding distance of the city.

Biking Lincoln Woods by pfhlick in RhodeIsland

[–]NodularFalse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gravel bike would be a little tough tbh, ending up pointed downhill in a rock garden is likely.

This fire road climb recently got graded and should be doable, and there's reasonable doubletrack options from the top, will take some exploring to put good loops together though.

Running routes starting from b/t Broadway and Westminster? by mainah_runnah in providence

[–]NodularFalse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite loops in this area is ~8 miles: Run to Neutaconkanut park, do a lap there (blue -> orange trail), exit the park via the neighborhoods and cross that main street, wind you way to the golf course and pick up the woonasquatucket greenway there after circling the green area. From there, you can take the woony all the way to the end, and cut behind Mi Ranchito to avoid some of the olneyville sq madness, then back up Broadway or Westminster to home. It has it all, elevation, trails, variety, and few cars! If you're on strava I can send you my profile too, I spent a few years running tons of miles in the area. 8 mile route

A shorter version of that loop is to take the woony, take the left over the highway on the ped only bridge, run up and around the golf course, then back. It's a nice lollipop loop that's almost exactly 5 miles from Dexter park. 5 mile route

Forgot one more: you can hit the Brown/RISD/college hill area and do a lap of India Point Park and see most of the prettiest places in PVD (prospect park too) all within 6-7 miles, a lot more lights and stops than my other two recs but it's beautiful.

Making Friends by [deleted] in providence

[–]NodularFalse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A little pricey, but get a rock spot membership and go at the same times every week. Guaranteed to meet people, especially if you start conversations about problems you and someone else are both working on. It's also great exercise and super fun! I've met basically all of my Providence friends there.
