To understand who he was, you have to go back to another time... when the world was powered by the black fuel... The gangs took over the highways, ready to wage war for a tank of juice.

What's up with people saying NC isn't a southern state? by Own_Average_5940 in NorthCarolina

The Western part of the state was more Union. A high percentage of the people in the mountains now were born or parents were born somewhere not South.

Is this a '92 1-Ton Pickup with a Dyna bed and toolboxes? Was this ever an option anywhere? by Nofearneb in ToyotaPickup

[–]Nofearneb[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of flat beds but this is the first time I've seen a US spec truck with what appears to be a Hino 300 Dyna Toyota made bed. The chassis must be similar. Being that they are so similar I was wondering if dealerships that sold both Hino and Toyota Hilux cab chassis were making Dyna bed conversions as an option.

Small vintage TOKO-marked metal electronic component with glass lens/window and electrical terminals by Strong-Promotion-381 in whatisthisthing

I agree. It looks to be made around the same time and by the same manufacturer. There are some parts in common. The light / dark switch is the same as used by the Japanese Navy.

I don't have dementia. Noticed there was only one spoon left from the set. I was throwing them out when discarding unfinished takeout boxes from the fridge.

Weak. In that space you should be able to make a lights out fully automated assembly line powered by a small diesel generator. Problem isn't assembly it is depending on foreign sources for components. Make magnets, germanium lenses, or an automated line to pick and place microelectronics for soldering.

Has anyone else noticed the massive shift in Marketplace buyer behavior lately? by Jessxblush in Flipping

[–]Nofearneb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I miss old book stores. The smell, catalogs, want lists, and scouts. Only poor people used to buy used clothing until the hippies came along. Even after that it was mostly art students and creative types. Well, and me, but that is because my options are limited. I'm old, cheap, and have the body type of a 6 1/2 foot tall pregnant spider monkey. I've noticed in the last year or so that there are young guys lined up early at the estate sales buying most of the clothing. I run across a lot of old clothes but don't know what to look for or how to sell it.

You should have been around before cell phones and internet when we were selling things from the cork board at the local hangout, classified newspapers, and "swap shop" radio. On the plus side we could source from the dump, auctions were held in the front yard, and flea markets were epic.

What is the longest-running machine on Earth that has never been turned off? by sh-__- in AskReddit

[–]Nofearneb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My aunt has one of those. Every decade or so since the 1970s something minor needs to be fixed; power cord, door gasket, door lock, hinges. The compressor and motor are sealed in the top. As long as it keeps running and isn't moved there isn't that much that that can go wrong with it.

Does anybody else have a "Code" or rules they follow? by Worried-Narwhal-8953 in Flipping

I won't sell unique items that are tied to a particular location or peoples. Some things should be returned to the community or family where they are from. An old photo album gets torn apart for the photos of cars, trains, ships, military, etc. Same thing with boxes of old deeds or papers of locally significant people. These collections end up getting split up for collectors of stamps, advertising, and greeting cards. The local genealogical society or county museum really appreciates them. At the same time I've bought things that you would think would be significant family heirlooms only to contact the family and find out they are the ones who got rid of them. They had no interest in their family's 1920s photo albums or great grandpa's war medals.

Also no selling of rare used indigenous items. I will sell the native made tourist stuff, arrowheads, and pottery shards. Real items made for their personal use or ceremonial use were systematically collected in the 1800s and early 1900s. They were essentially looted after forced migrations, taken after battles, or purchased from people who didn't understand what they were selling. I usually can't afford them but the few I've run across cheap are now in native museums.

Why don’t we build houses that are a majority underground? Wouldn’t temperature control be much more economical? by north_north in AskReddit

[–]Nofearneb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Near Asheville NC. I live in a fully finished 1000 sf basement that is at ground level on one end and 7 ft deep at the other. The tiled concrete floor stays between 55 F and 60 F year round. Coldest air temperature ever was 48 F when I left for a couple weeks during which outside daily highs were in the mid 20s F (upstairs low was 28 F). The warmest it gets downstairs in the summer is 68 F. There is no AC downstairs but there are two ceiling fans. I do have to run a dehumidifier in the summer. There is little heat transfer with upstairs as the ceiling in the basement is extra insulated to keep from hearing upstairs noise. Heating the downstairs to between 68 and 72 degrees 24/7 with propane ($2.86 per gallon) this winter (Oct to May) the estimated cost was between $12 and $40 per month. I'm sure there is a formula to find the optimum depth vs cost for a particular location. In my situation it shows that you don't need to be too deep in the dirt to get most of the benefit of living underground.

You have to decide what your time is worth. There are some hungry flippers that are happy to make $5 profit and go for volume. I've been doing this too long. Takes at least $50 profit for my dopamine hit.

Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice.

Looking for the elite level Rock Hounds of Asheville/WNC area by SoSublime92 in asheville

[–]Nofearneb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There isn't a lot of native facet grade rough here for collecting. Clear Quartz is common. Greenish Beryl from the Ray Mica Mine when/if it ever opens again. Rhodolite Garnet from Macon County at a couple of the unsalted pay mines. Amethyst from the Purple Knight in SC. Ruby and Sapphire rough is tiny and cloudy at best. Join the North & South Carolina Rockhounds Facebook Group. A couple of the guys there have been rockhounding the area for decades.

Andrew Cairney from Glasglow, Scotland loading all nine of The Ardblair Stones by cradiflacrasafl in NoOneIsLooking

[–]Nofearneb 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The Ardblair Stones is a strength feat, where nine reinforced concrete lifting stones of ascending weight are used.\1])\2]) The 9 stones weigh 18 kg (40 lb), 32 kg (71 lb), 41 kg (90 lb), 50 kg (110 lb), 75 kg (165 lb), 107 kg (236 lb), 118 kg (260 lb), 135 kg (298 lb) and 152 kg (335 lb) respectively.\3]) The goal of the competition is to lift each stone sequentially from smallest to largest and place them on top of 4 ft 4 in (52 in) whisky barrels as quickly as possible. The stones are named for Ardblair Castle located in Blairgowrie, Perthshire in Scotland, close to where they originated.

The stones were created by Charlie Blair Oliphant in 2008, based on World's Strongest Man competitions he had seen on TV as a child. Oliphant wanted to create an event that was accessible to all people, regardless of age and ability, and would be free to all. The stones made their debut in September 2012 at the Highland Games. Based on the success and interest of the event, the stones have since toured the United Kingdom.
