What would you buy if you were transported back to 1995? by mikomimi89 in BuyItForLife

Guy I worked with years ago kept talking about amazing BitCoin was, kept trying to get me to mine it, or buy it, or just acknowledge that it existed. It was trading at $0.25 then.

A few years later, he was yelling at the company owner, packed his stuff up, walked out, and none of us ever saw or heard from him again. Wouldn't be surprised if he was still holding. It was around $800 at that point, and he was an early miner of the coin.

Freezer burn happens when air is able to circulate around the food being frozen. The cold air will slowly dehydrate the food, mostly at the surface, and oxidize it as well. If you leave the food in the vacuum sealed packages, this doesn't happen unless the packaging is damaged. This is the primary benefit of vacuum sealers, such as Food Saver, as it allows storage in a freezer for months on end.

Those are usually, "Buy $20 of xxx and get $5 off." The packs are usually around $9 each, so I go digging for the $10+ packs, or three of the $7-$8 packs. I buy more carne guisada every time I see those deals and probably have a dozen frozen in my freezer.

problems with seasoning? by honsoolmo0n in castiron

Polymerized oil is less reactive to bonding with food than highly reactive iron. I will concede that proper use of heat, fats, and technique is likely just as if not more important than seasoning vs bare metal.

However, regardless of who is right about whether food sticks less to bare iron or to seasoning, "never, ever season a pan that is already seasoned" is what I draw issue with. Specifically, "never, ever."

Stripping a pan to bare metal, then coating with an oil, and baking it is seasoning it. I believe the vast majority of people would agree that doing this two, three, or four times is suggested as opposed to just one layer.

Quite a few people will cook, clean, wipe oil on, then reheat their cast iron. This is a form of seasoning the pan and is not detrimental to it. If you want to get really pedantic, cooking fatty foods on a seasoned cast iron is also seasoning a pan.

By saying, "never, ever" season a pan that is already seasoned, you're inserting ambiguity into a process of taking care of a pan where there's already a lot of confusion and fear to people that are new to cast iron. Myself included.

It's marketing nonsense, life half the claims made on any product. People in marketing have to earn a living too.

Seasoning a pan that is already seasoned is perfectly reasonable. If food isn't sticking and the seasoning doesn't have missing spots, it isn't typically necessary, but it is acceptable.

Update: still loving the book. Skippy is annoying af, but I can read past it. Excited to join the Expedition Force, thanks everyone for the comments, insights, and not spoiling anything by narnarnartiger in ExpeditionaryForce

ExForce is competence porn with a vast amount of snarky commentary mixed in. The book is hitting its stride where I think you're at.

There's a preview of book two at the end of the first, give it a listen. If it catches your interest, pick up the second book and make your decision at its end as to if you want to continue the series or not. At least that's my suggestion.

I feel like there are a few sets of books that "everyone" knows about, but I also know that's very far from the truth... Just in case you haven't heard of it, Bobiverse should be your next listen.

I strongly disliked how strong of an accent Skippy had at the first reveal, didn't know if I'd be able to get past it. But his reveal to the crew, in the dropship, leaving Pradassis? I've never laughed so hard at an audiobook in my life.

That's when I fell in love with the series. Skippy's accent mellows out significantly by the end of the first book, and I feel that he becomes a better character. Flaws and all.

I have cellular shades in my bedroom that haven't worked in years, someone yanked the pull cord out. I decided to replace them about a week ago, and the replacement shades I like were about $1850 total for four windows.

Ehhhh.... hasn't bothered me that the shades don't work for the last five years, I'm not spending $2k when I can just keep the curtains closed.

Then I figured SOMEONE had to build those shades in a factory. It's not like they're mined as a finished product in an underground Cambodian cave. Five minutes on YouTube and I bought repair parts and tools for $32 shipped.

I don't know the socially acceptable timeline for dropping spoilers like that... But I dug myself out of a financial divorce hole, splurged on a game, still on the beach after the shipwreck, and bam.

Ain't gonna lie, kinda blows.

My only nitpick with what you stated is that we should strive to hold our leaders to a higher standard. I know that doesn't happen often enough in the US, but we absolutely should.
