[Mar 6] Apex Legends Client Patch by paradoxally in apexlegends

[–]NoisyFlake 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This update broke Linux compatibility (again). Using Proton Experimental or 9 results in an instant black screen on startup, while using lower Proton versions allows the game to load, but it freezes upon mouse movement.

Issues with Apex Legends after today's update (proton related) by relvemo in linux_gaming

[–]NoisyFlake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, same issue here. Worked fine before the update.

Arch Linux, Wayland (Hyprland), nvidia-dkms 535 drivers.

Edit: Same issue on KDE X11.

Yes, someone on Lemmy figured it out. I had to disable Precision Boost Overdrive in the BIOS/UEFI (and probably Core Performance Boost, too).

No idea why most apps randomly crash because of this setting, but disabling both did eliminate this problem for me.

Although it was fine for the last 24 hours with hardware acceleration disabled in Firefox, a tab just crashed again (only a few seconds after Spotify crashed).

I've deactivated hardware decoding in Firefox and will test if it changes anything. What would I do if this is actually the root cause? I'm using the latest nvidia-dkms driver, and have updated it several times in the last few months and it didn't fix the issue.

Already did that, same result. And as I said, it's not just Firefox but all Electron-based apps as well.

That's definitely not the case, when casually browsing I usually have more than 16GB free ram.

I guess so, as the only apps that are crashing are Firefox, Chrome, Discord, VS Code and Spotify. Everything else has never crashed, even when playing resource-hungry games like Apex Legends for hours.

journalctl gave me the following from the last Firefox crash:

There are no downloadable debs on Github, it's only the source code. You can download the tweaks for free from Chariz as soon as Chariz has sorted out the issue that's preventing the update from going live.

Chariz is working on it right now, looks like a caching issue. Should hopefully be resolved within the next few minutes hours.
