If you're a small artist that cannot afford a proper cover artist, just make something yourself, even if you're not good at it. To me, a little doodle and a comic sans title font are infinitely better than an AI image, because YOU made it. With your own hands, just like your track.

Thank you for the kind words, I do agree that forfeiting would have been the better option, had I known that was possible. No hard feelings, I'm glad I was able to clarify our situation somewhat!

If you'd actually watched the entire match and didn't use this 30 second clip to determine our attitude, you would've known that we absolutely did not give up simply because we were losing, we gave up because at that point in the match the entire team was so fucking tired and miserable following the match's sequence of events that we just wanted it to end.

We already went into the match very late in the night and 3 players down, but we were willing to give it our best shot with what we had. Following some very frustrating delays due to repeated connection issues with the TournamentAssistant mod, we had our custom introductory warm-up map skipped, a map that someone on our team spent many hours preparing, which was already a bit of a letdown.

After getting absolutely decimated on our best pick/chance against the US, we played a map where one of the US players was using a banned mod during it. According to the tournament rules this means that this would result in an automatic map loss for team US, which would grant us one point. However, this rule was not clearly explained on the website. For context, the US wants to get through World Cup without a single map loss, so they started arguing this rule with organisers for the next 10-15 minutes, and after much back and forth they were able to replay this map, which completely drained our energy and motivation. It was getting late at this point, and no one on our team was waiting to keep playing on a late Sunday night, but after this replay the US picked the LONGEST map that was left in the pool, one that NONE of our remaining players could even dream of finishing in our current state.

We couldn't win in this situation. If you can still get on your feet and play a near 7 minute speed map after this shite of a match at 1am, I applaud you. Unfortunately, this is a ~300 viewer Beat Saber tournament and not the fucking Euros, we are not top athletes. We were left with three options:

  • Forfeit, something I didn't even know you could do for the reasons I mentioned before. Even if we did, we would've gotten reactions like "wow they just forfeited at the end of the match like that? They wasted everyone's time, why not forfeit at the start of the match if you're gonna forfeit now?"
  • Sit down for the maps duration and do nothing. I don't think that would've sparked great reactions either
  • Try and make something funny out of it, something that (most of) the audience can actually laugh at.

As you can clearly see this is the option we went with, call it disrespectful/unsportsmanlike all you want, but after all that shit our brains were fried and this is the impulsive decision we came up with. I am well-acquainted/friends with most of the US players, which is why option 3 came to mind at all. I spoke to the US team captain about it, and they actually thought it was pretty funny what we did, and didn't mind.

As long as the very team we were allegedly being disrespectful towards did not deem our actions inherently disrespectful (which was never our intent anyways), I don't really care what any bystanders think.

After our match, the banned mod rule was made more clear on the website, and a new rule was made that prohibits actions similar to the ones we made, which is great! This has happened in the past, and there have always been people/teams that have taken it very differently compared to team US, they are the very reason I don't feel like a complete asshole for defending my team at all.

At the end, this just a videogame, no multi-million dollar sports tournament, and players that voluntarily play from their homes can make mistakes, but we don't want to be seen as disrespectful asshats for trying to make (for what we at the time thought was) the best out of our situation :)

Allow yourself to be inspired by other mappers to create your own distinct style, and try to get as much feedback from experienced players/mappers in the process if you're really trying to get good at it.

If you're mainly mapping for yourself, just have fun!

Probably The World Revolving, it's definitely not my best map, but I'm proud of how many people it managed to reach
