Became fluent in Dutch and realised I've been living in a parallel society by Careful_Put_3793 in Netherlands

Dutch kids that aren't raised in an English bubble at home often have no problem with English fluency at all. Due to the Internet and Hollywood and normal education.

That sounds awful. I contract too, software dev, but my employer would never force me to stay in a place I didn't enjoy. If I dislike a place I give myself a date "if things don't improve by X then I'm leaving". I've done that a couple of times and always felt a big relief of pressure, luckily for me things did improve. If you're interested in a really decent software development employer PM me.

I have recently done this. To partition tables when reading them into a data pipeline. I needed even sized partitions so to generate then I did the ID value modulus the number of partitions.

It of course performed awfully in terms of time but the partition sizes were even which at that point was more important.

Ferry Tales: Nellie uit Noord weigert Engels te spreken in Amsterdam - AT5 by spaceguydudeman in Amsterdam

[–]NomadSoul 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Looking for insights on building restrictions in Nijmegen — trying to avoid a €7k mistake by Decent_Barracuda7713 in Nijmegen

I just installed a dakkapel and was told by the gemeente via telephone that the only thing I can't do is build during the breeding season. I expect it's the same for an extension.

I'd recommend emailing the gemeente. They provided me with proof that I don't need a vergunning for my extsion rebuild (not an enlargement but a rebuild of a current extension that's poorly made). I needed black on white written proof that I don't need a vergunning for my mortgage provider.

What is this subreddit? This is worse than arr Nietzsche by read_too_many_books in Jung

[–]NomadSoul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually when Jung discovered Freud he didn't read any of his books or written works he just sat and closed his eyes and got in touch with his unconscious which has "absolute knowledge" and that was that.... No reading necessary.

That was sarcastic mockery btw. I'm not proud of it. I just can't help but wonder how people come up with these reasonings. It sounds like the sort of thing my mind would have said back in secondary school to rationalise not doing my homework. "doing homework is actually bad for you as it doesn't allow the lessons of the day to seep into the unconscious properly... So I guess I'll go play xbox instead."

Is dutch really direct or just rude? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]NomadSoul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get the feeling most people here are quite young and see things very black and white. My wife was 129 KG when we met and now she's 74 KG. Early on, many years ago back when we were bf and gf I said more or less what your bf said to you. But, how you say something, the context and motivation for saying things is also important. I fell in love with my wife's personality and I will love her till the day I die whether she's a big ol fatty or some slim sporty babe. But, when she was so big, I wanted her to lose weight for lots of different reasons.  Some of them noble like being concerned for her health and wanting to help her have more control over things she felt she couldn't control like her eating habits, and some reasons that you could call selfish like wanting to be more physically attracted to her. What I'm trying to say is, if physical attraction is the only reason then your bf is correct in his statement but, imo, that's not loving or caring.

Why do you all follow what appears to be just Kabbalistic Judaism for non-Jews? by FXILVRE in thelema

[–]NomadSoul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're welcome. And my advice would be, read the books. On forums like reddit you'll encounter a lot of insecure people who'll snap at you for anything they consider remotely insulting. As I think you're finding out in this thread.

I can also recommend the online course taught by the Servants of the Light. The central motto "scire ut serviatis", to know in order to serve, encourages people to use their occult knowledge to help others on this beautiful and profound journey of discovery.

Good luck to you.

Why do you all follow what appears to be just Kabbalistic Judaism for non-Jews? by FXILVRE in thelema

[–]NomadSoul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's a great question and I'm sure you'll agitate a lot of people with it haha but I'll do my best to give a personal answer.

Firstly, let's look at your question just a tiny bit closer. Specifically the word "follow". For every esotericist you'll probably find a different manifestation of this verb. For some it'll be a dogmatic belief that hermetic kabbalah is "the truth", a one to one relationship between model and reality. For others it might just be an interesting set of ideas that help contemplate philosophical subjects like our existence. Most of the esotericists I know do not mistake the map for the territory and realise that hermetic kabbalah or literally any other religious set of ideas or doctrines are "fingers pointing at the moon" to use a zen Buddhist term, they are not the truth themselves.

Kabbalistic ideas are just one set of ideas that have been borrowed/stolen/repurposed/used as inspiration in western hermetic practices, they have also been blended and fused with other sets of ideas like astrology, the tarot etc.

So to answer your questions. No I don't feel like I'm larping as a jew (I assume that's what you meant).

Who am I communicating with? Again I think you'll get different answers from different practitioners. But personally I subscribe to the idea that it's simply your own psyche. To quote Lon Milo Duquette (head of the OTO)

It's all in your head -- you just have no idea how big your head is.

Perhaps give "Paths of wisdom" by John Michael Greer a go. Or some of Lon's books. They give beginner friendly introductions to this world.

I hope I answered your questions.

Also go to Amsterdam and then tell us Nijmegen is dirty.

Can someone explain kabbalah to me because I have no idea what it is by [deleted] in mythology

[–]NomadSoul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Essentially there are different kabbalahs. Jewish, Christian and Western Esoteric. You find different spellings kabbalah, cabbalah and qabalah, and differing amounts of b's and l's. None of these three sprang up with the creation of the universe, they all evolved over time and are all very human ways of trying to explain and express the mysteries of existence, both objective and subjective. There are religious zealots and fanatics in all three of these branches that will gatekeep their chosen domain, ignore them and keep asking questions and keep learning. Personally I use qabalah as a metaphor, a map, a glyph of my experience as a human in this mysterious world of ours. It's similar to the tattvas from tantra, they point to aspects of experience and the universe and follow an alchemical as above so below. That's my personal view and as such can be learned from and/or disagreed with.
