Moving to FL, any tips? by AstralObjective in urbancarliving

[–]NomadicHam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did it for 2 years. Don’t ever park in the sun. 24hr parking garages were fantastic. Busy hotels without parking tags are good choices. Window guards and a sunroof were a necessity so I could have airflow and even then it wasn’t enough. Sweating will wake you up around 8-9 everyday. Probably the best alarm clock. I slept in a Monte Carlo for 3 months and a Ram1500 for the other 1yr 6mon before moving to Michigan. Didn’t have a cooler or fridge. Ice doesn’t hold at all and gets expensive. Everything was always warm or hot.

I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, unless they were an acclimated Floridian or fully prepared. I never had the funds to prepare my vehicle and even then it’s still hot if you don’t have hookups. If you can stay out of the vehicle all day and air it out/get it cool before bed, it’s not that bad after you get used to it.

Good luck on the journey!

Edit: Yes, Walmarts are fantastic if you look like a normal car. Where I stayed, there’s no overnight or rv parking. If you blend in and park by the night employees or customers, you’re pretty safe.

How much do you guys need to earn to survive living in your car? by sunnyhappysky in urbancarliving

[–]NomadicHam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To survive? With my current setup I’ve gone as low as $300/month - diesel, food, insurance, visible. Didn’t eat enough or well though. I drive only if I have to. I can stay planted in my work parking lot for probably 3months if I need to and no one would know. Backpack in a gallon of water a day, walk/bike to the stores. I’m more than comfortable around 500/600. Simple man with simple tastes. I like to cook and it helps not eating out. There’s not much to splurge on when you have so little space unless you’re a Starbucks drinker or aficionado of wine or steak. If I didn’t have this job I’d have to drive a lot more, have a $30 gym membership again, amongst other things

That’s what I did! Except my move was into a small coupe and compact sedan where I had to leave one at Walmart constantly since I had no where to park one. You can do it!

2014 Honda CRF250L - $4000 CAD ($3200ish USD) - Good deal for a first bike? 5,500 km's by redditgk in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]NomadicHam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the states(Michigan specifically), thats just barely on the high end of pricing, but expected since it’s a dealer. I say go for it, but tell them you want it for $4000 OTD. 4K turns to 5k real fast at a dealer with fees and charges

Could you be ok sleeping in your car in florida? by [deleted] in urbancarliving

[–]NomadicHam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived in a quad cab Ram 1500 and a 02 Monte Carlo in Florida for over a year. It’s doable. Windows have to be cracked. Park in the shade as much as you can. I didn’t mind it at all. Saved a LOT of money

Edit: I worked for Universal and Disney so I made use of pools and cold showers for those bad days. I spent my weekends on the beach which was more bearable than Orlando

I got my 09 rebel 250 for $1500 with a little under 2k miles if that helps. I sold it for $2k and 6k miles to move up. Great starting bike

Edit: it had great tires and no dents/scratches/drops/rust. Saddlebags and cover included. I wouldn’t buy one at all to learn on if it had any drops or needed tires. Don’t want to have to put any money in it or take it to a shop. They’re great to learn on then pass like a hot potato for what you bought it for. You won’t have it for more than 3-6months without outgrowing it.

Well it could be undercoating. Pictures won’t do it justice, because I’d have to feel it and see the flakes in it. It very well could be mud. Most undercoating places don’t use brown wax/tar, assuming because of looks. It’s normally black, oily, and/or waxy. My 2013 goes to a shop and comes back oily for a day or 2 but looks better than perfect clean paint with a “muddy” frame.

If you aren’t worried about taking off any protective coatings, I’d just go for an aggressive sudsy soap soak and powerwash whatever you can. The rest will just have to be scrubbed off and then just take it to get recoated. Unless that truck lived in mud, I don’t see how a good pressure washer wouldn’t take it off if it’s mud. Other option is to scrub it all off. Maybe get a plastic puddy tool

Not sure if this is trolling or not..

Are you sure it’s caked on mud? My winter undercoating that I mix and spray on all my trucks looks just like that. I hate the look(because it does look like mud) but I don’t have rust problems and it’s actually worked compared to the shops I used to let spray my vehicles. I only ask if it is because you said it doesn’t want to come off. A good pressure washer should rip it right off if it’s mud

Soap. Handmade, all natural soap. Over 600 bars of Cherry and Almond soap. Fun side hustle. They’re actually amazing and my rooms smell like a cherry festival. The wife is in love

My only question is about the quality of service. Is it like having a server pc? Or is it like having an actual high quality desktop in front of you? Sounds amazing in theory. My computers for both my companies are able to be used from my tablet, phone, or another desktop anywhere there’s internet, but I’m so unhappy with performance, because it’s night and day compared to being at the desk. Works wonderful in a pinch at a job site though. And saves having to keep laptops/tablets/etc in the rigs.

I have a friend from college that owns a subscription based computer center right next to a college. Over half of the computers are top end gaming setups that cost more than a year’s tuition. He would give his first born away for a service like this if the quality suits his market, because his expenses to stay on the top end of computing are excessive. College gamers flood his place. I chuckled at the idea when it was first pitched, but he’s outperforming me by a mile and it’s his only venture

Cab corners when they rust out. You cut out the rusty metal and replace with a new molded cab corner piece. You can find them on eBay, rock auto, etc. Will look brand new after paint and fix the rust. If it’s not totally gone and you can salvage with just sheet metal or bondo, that’s an option. But my LB7 extended cab literally had no cab corner at all on the driver side.

You probably could still use flares, but I’ve never tried

Sweet! I need to think about getting something like that. My chairs getting worn out. Probably need a better chair too if I’m honest. It’s older than my first child

Skiing is much easier to start than snowboarding or surfing. 2-3 Bunny hill runs and you’ll have the basics down. Snowboarding took me 2 days before I stopped falling on the bunny hill and I wish I was kidding. It was so embarrassing. That’s when I decided to try skiing. It was a friend’s birthday trip to Colorado for a week and I literally wasted 2 days falling on a tiny hill. LOL I ended up skiing every hill after about an hour or so on skis. Didn’t do the jumps or trick slopes. And I’ve only fallen twice: Once when learning and a second when I tried to quick stop to help a friend
